Sexual harassment troubled numerous career women. “ A female employee worked at Panasonic China Branch was sacked for her rejection of her superior’s sexual harassment. The lady alias Shen Yang could resist the depression and tried to kill herself by taking sleeping pills on January 23, 2008. Luckily, the dose is not excessive enough. She was saved, according to Beijing Morning Post, April 16 news coverage.

Miss Shen has worked at the sales department for more than two years. Since Januarary 2007, her superior, whom she reports directly for, have been trying to harass her. Several times, her superior tried to harass her. She rejected the sexuall harassment, which made her a hard life in the department. Her superior tried to find excuses to pick on her. He threatened her by claiming that she would be fired. Miss Shen firmly refused all his illicit demand.

On January 23, 2008, her superior demanded her to escort him on a business trip. She had no choice but to go on the trip since she feared to lose the job. Before her departure, she prepared “sleeping pills” and wrote a farewell will to her husband. When her superior demand her to have sex with him, she refused and took some “sleeping pills”. Fortunately, her husband found the farewell will in time and saved her at the hotel.

According to media in Beijing, the superior have been fired by Panisonic. This case is only the tip of the iceberg that sexual harassment still troubled countless career women.

Is it easy for women in China to report cases of sexual harrassment? Are there cultural or bureaucratic roadblocks?

I'm glad the tragedy was avoided and if I was her husband I would have beat the crap out of him.

The case echoed my response to another thread on this topic. Interfering with the boss' affair may cost your job. Certainly, this case is different from that one.

Nope, not easy at all. There are more cultural roadblocks than bureaucratic roadblocks. Sexual harassment is a notorious scandal. The worst thing is that in most cases the victims (women who were harassed) felt too disgraceful to report for the case of sexual harassment. If she reported the case, there might be more gossips about the woman. Sigh, most victims of sexual harassment (or rape) just kept silent for fear of losing face and dignity.

Thanks for the response, Leonardo. I hope women everywhere become more empowered as their societies become less male-centric and insensitive (even antagonistic) to women's issues.
