![]() | The CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) is a Canadian crown corporation, Canada's national public radio and television broadcaster (broadcasts are in English and French). It is owned/funded by the Canadian government but is run/managed independently. It is a high quality news/entertainment service similar to the BBC. Some of you may know that earlier this year China blocked access to the CBC for several months. I'm not sure why exactly, but it may have been partly because of some controversial political issues that were occupying the headlines. The CBC website has begun to have interactive news stories published. Most news items allow readers to log in and post comments about the story. Censorship by the CBC on these comments is limited mostly to obscene remarks and the like. I'm wondering whether there are any Chinese news websites where the general public can write comments similar to the way the CBC has set this up? |

![]() | Canadaguy, I haven't seen a Chinese website that allows the readers to write their comments so far. However, the foreign websites that I usually log on almost allows its readers to write comments. |

![]() | What are you implying CANADAGUY? My opinion of that feature is that it allows people educated beyond their intelligence to pander uninformed or ill-informed comments to taint the minds of those people seriously seeking information. Were I enforcing the policies of China, I would consider such a feature an infection vector. If I do not enable the feature global bile could not infect my country. ...but actually, there are a number of Chinese newspapers that have forums to discuss the news. For the most part, the forums are filled with the sorts of comments I mentioned. |

![]() | For the most part, I like reading the comments of others on news stories. It gives you a general sense of what people are thinking on various issues. Sort of like taking a social pulse. Sure there are nut cases posting all the time and people expressing deviant opinions, but that's reality, a slice of society. I haven't posted any comments yet because I can't be bothered to log in, but I have clicked on the 'recommend' button of many comments that I'm in agreement with (this feature also gives readers feedback on what people are thinking). Today however I was dismayed to learn that the CBC's censorship role in these comments goes beyond just removing obscenities. The top news story today was on the Burma storm disaster. One person's comment on the story was removed, however many people read it before the CBC took action. The people referred to the poster's comment in their own comments. The person had made an anti-social comment about the disaster. Something to the effect that Canadian relief shouldn't be wasted on this disaster. That the money would be better spent on the needy in Canada. Although I strongly disagree with this person's comment, I don't feel the CBC should censor this type of post. |
