Dear All,

We have since received travel advisory not to travel to Sichuan and AIrChina has refunded our money. We're re-routing to Yunnan but since the earthquake aftershocks...don't know whether it's a good idea at all?? No news about the affects on Yunnan and provinces closer to Sichuan. Anyone with the slightest info...can help?

BTW, take care.

Iracubet,

Take a look at this site below and the maps of the larger after shocks and you can see that most of them are occurring to the north of the original.
You can also see the statistics from reports of how much the larger ones are being felt in other cities.

Chengdu, of course and Chongqing, Xian, Baoji and Taiyuan are the major cities which are feeling after shocks over 5.5 and this depends a lot on where a person is at the time. I.e. in a tall building which is where the shock is felt the most.

You can safely travel to Yunnan, Chongqing and Guizhou
Have a look at Guizhou it has some of Sichuan's ethnic appeal and beautiful scenery too

Enjoy your trip

Hi guys,

Here in Chengdu life is slowly returning back to its normal pace. This place has been absolutly apocalyptic these past few weeks.
Almost the entire city (millions) spent two weeks outside on the streets in makeshift tents. And everytime another strong quake hits people run outside in panic. The worst problem is that we are absolutly clueless about whats comming next. We all would like to go back to the time right after the earthquake with nice harmless constant aftershocks instead of one 5 a day and one 6 every weekend. it makes no sence.

For people who want to visit the city, everything is open for the moment so there is no reason why you shouldn't come to Chengdu.
off course, please stay out of the dangerzone, there are already too many people going there to see the damage for themselves. People affected by the quake lost everything! Make a contribution to the red cross or something, for now, it is not place for Laowais.

Thanks for this update.

Just keep in mind that the road to all these places passes through Dujiangyan, Yingxiu and Wenchuan which are three of the most severely damaged cities. While life is returning to "normal", life is far from normal, road conditions are rough at best and there are still daily tremors throughout the region with summer rain fall also an issue.

Now is not the time to be travelling along this route. Most of these places can be reached by alternative routes but will obviously take longer or require flying. Kanding's new airport opens this month I believe

Update on DANBA and FOUR GIIRLS MOUNTAINS----:
wrote Mr. Kenzo Okawa to me on June 8

(Mr. Okawa is mountaineer, photographer and advisor to Four Girls Mountain Natural Reserve Management Bureau, who is residing in Danba with his Jiarong tibetan wife and family) :

"Only one tourist had the misfortune to be injured by falling stones in the mountain.

But the peoples who live at the Danba and the Four Girls Mountains are safe.

However, part of a Tibetan stone-piled house at the Four Girls Mountains was damaged by the earthquake.

And the electric current is almost cut off owing to the failure of the power station at the Four Girls Mountains and power line from the Wenchuan County.
The restoration schedule of the power station depends on the adjustment of a budget of the government.

After the earthquake till now, the route of Balangshan Pass became closed to automobile traffic. It will need several months to restore the route.

The route of Jiajinshan Pass and the route of Danba are passable. "

Tourism resumes in quake-hit cities
Source: CCTV.com | 06-14-2008 12:26

Provincial authorities have announced a return to full operations for many attractions starting Sunday this weekend.

The cities of PanZhiHua, NeiJiang, DaZhou and GuangAn are now open to travellers. But for some of the worst-hit spots, such as DuJiangYan, there will be access to just some of the usual tourist sites, with entry fees lifted for the next 3 months.

This report also included Zigong but I wasn't aware that it was adversely affected.

Panzhihua is so far south near the border with Yunnan that I am surprised that it was even on the list of closed sites.

The above report stated that the local authorities in Dujiangyan want visitors to see the extent of the damage to cultural relics and to observe the re-construction work as it takes place in the future.

Another serious landslide this week temporarily closed the road near Yingxiu and Dujiangyan.

Memorials were held yesterday for the military, police and civilians who died in the helicopter crash. The wreckage took twelve days to locate and extricate the bodies. This is a good indication of the difficulty of working in this kind of terrain.
