Hi Everybody,

I am planning to go to Shanghai sometime in the next few months. I have never been to China before and am looking for as much help as possible. I am looking to stay at a hotel in the Jiangan region of Shanghai. I will be traveling on a budget and don't want to pay a lot for a hotel but still want something nice. I was hoping to keep my hotel bill around $60.00 US Dollars per night or less. I will be flying into Pudong airport and will need quick transportation to where I will be staying. Any and all help will be very much appreciated, especially regarding the costs of things like the Maglev and other forms of transportation. Web sites with information would be great too. I should also let you know that I speak no Chinese. Does anyone know of a good electronic translator I could buy to help me out?

Thanks everybody, I look forward to hearing from you all.

When I tooke my trip in shanghai, my friend and I lived in a small but very comfortable hotel named "如家“ (means hotel like home). the price is cheap, around 120~150RMB per day. I searched it's website for you, but it's pity that only chinese version (http://www.suitrip.com/index.asp) but maybe you can give it a call for the information. I remembered if you reserved advanced you also can get around 85% price off.
In case your computer can't display the chinese, I copy the hotline number of this hotel for you, 4006281116 .
the website said it's a free call. but i'm not sure if it's still free from oversea.

GUESTBRETT Shanghai is a very big city and the most western city I ever visited while in China. You will see lots of foriegners around and most will be more than happy to help you if needed. It shouldn't be too hard finding a decent hotel for under 400RMB. The maglev is very fast and can get you into Shanghai the quickest, but you will need to take a taxi from the maglev station upon arrival. A one way ticket should cost you around $7-9, but you can get like a 20% discount when purchasing the ticket by showing/giving them your airline ticket stub. Just follow the signs inside the airport and you should be fine. You buy tickets right there and board right there. The trip should only take about 8 minutes. Then you need to get a taxi from there to where you are going to stay. The best bet is to print an address or name off of their website where you are going to stay and give that to the taxi driver since your mandarin will be non-existent.

Hope your trip goes well! And have fun!!!

GUEST62115 Indeed, Shanghai is most western city in China I have visited too. In comparison with other cities many people speak English there so is not difficult to find help. Enjoy it, because I already miss it.

Hi,
I have been to Shanghai several times. You can look on sinohotels.com and look at the prices there. It is in english. If you take a taxi it will cost you about 150 to 160 yuan RMB from Pudong Airport to the city. They do have airport buses that only cost 18 yuan per person. I usually stay at a local hotel where they do not speak much english. I hope this will help a little. I myself, will be going to Shanghai in late September. I hope you will have a good trip.
Take care

Thank you all for your assistance so far. I really appreciate the tips and links. I don't get a chance to log in here a lot right now because of work. I am working 2 jobs and need to sleep in between when I can so it leaves little time for getting on the internet right now. But, please keep posting suggestions, tips and tricks for travel around Shanghai it will be a great help for sure. :o)

Have you never thought about reading up online or in print? Plenty of information out there, your questions are FAQs!
There's no such district in Shanghai called "Jiangan". I presume you mean Jing'an? If so, I would suggest that you go for Paramount Hotel. It's 5 mins walk from a direct shuttle bus from Pudong airport, and right on top of a metro stop so it's very accessible. Look on http://www.exploreshanghai.com/metro for an interactive map of Shanghai's metro system.

Thank You Ellyse, yes I have thought of reading up but sometimes you get much better first hand information from people like you who took some time to point me in the right direction. I find getting info from people on a site like this that are close to the areas where I would like to go are most helpful. Yes you are right, I messed up in my spelling of the district and should have been Jing'an. I have been to the book store and checked on line for good books or maps and have not picked out one I really like just yet. I also want to pick up an electronic translator to help me out because if I understand correctly, there is not a lot of English in Shanghai? Thank you again Allyse, your information will be a great help to me and I really appreciate it. If you have any other thoughts please feel free to pass them on :o)

GUEST91147 I am living in Shanghai , any help you need , you can contact me , Skype: Ramona_liu

Maglev from Pudong airport to Longyang Road, take 7 mins, 40RMB (show boarding card), then take metro line 2 , directly to Jing an temple. Many ecomomic hotel and motel in Shanghai, if you living longer, can rent apartment for one or two month, about 5000--6000RMB/month. (1 single room).

Now 1USD=6.8RMB, 1Euro=9.5RMB.
