Any comments?
Questions - is 2nd class air-conditioned?
Is the scenery interesting enough?
What was the food like in the dining car?
What is second class (hard seats?) like?

Generally speaking, the food on the train doesn't taste good. If you are not on budget travel, you can try D-train, faster and cleaner than the other trains. The food on the train is better too. However, you have to pay much money for the D-train ticket.

Here are some trains from Beijing to Shanghai: Z21, Z13, Z7, Z1, Z5, T109 and T103. They are all air-conditioned. Since the distance between Beijing and Shanghai is too long (you need to spend 11 to 13 hours on the train), I suggest you buy hard or soft berth. Thus, you can rest on the bed. The ticket for hard/soft berth is expensive than hard seat and soft berth is expensive than hard berth.

Hope this is helpful.

Day train? I presume you mean the D train, since that's the only one that travels only during daytime.
Yes, 2nd-class is definitely air-conditioned.
I don't know what you would consider "interesting enough". If it's your 1st time here and you generally have an open mind then I suppose it would be good enough for you.
2nd-class isn't hard seats. Here's a photo of 2nd-class on another D train -- they're all the same, don't worry.

GUEST68209 I'm taking an overnight train from Beijing to Shanghai August 1. We're hoping for a delux, 2-person compartment. On china-train-ticket.com it looks like 2 trains offer this, the Z21 and the T103; they cost the same, and leave within an hour of each other. But the T103 appears to take 2 hours longer. Anyone know the difference between these two trains?

The deluxe soft sleeper is only available on the T train, no longer on the Z train.
The Z trains are generally nicer and faster.

I presume you meant Jiangsu, not Jianshu.
Deluxe soft sleeper for Beijing -- Shanghai should cost around 927 RMB for lower bunk, IIRC.
I'm not sure if there're deluxe soft sleepers on the Beijing -- Suzhou trains. Certainly none for Suzhou -- Shanghai!

Excuse me? Train tickets are not discounted. Soft sleeper on the T and Z trains are always 478/499 RMB for upper/lower bunk.

And in many cases especially during holidays, you may have to pay more than that.

Scalpers, can you sell me a ticket?

Could you advise how does traveling by air compare to traveling by train .. from Beijing to Shanghai and back. Flights might be costly but is the gap quite large? It's definitley quicker by flight. Thanks.
