Why are Chinese curious about ladies' ages?

It's just a question asked out of norm, something we are so used to ask, it's like a habit.. Just like some people like to "when is your turn?" when attending weddings. Nothing to be embarassed about our age really.. Any reason why we should?

Huamulan, Chinese people needn't be embarrassed when asked about their ages. But the westerners do care about it.
