guest3791 Which region should I go to learn authentic Chinese? I am told that I should go to Beijing because Beijing dialect is very similar to standard mandarin. Some people even say that Beijing dialect is mandarin. Is this true?

GUEST12883 Mandarin is reformed by Beijing dialect and Northeast dialect. Either Beijing or Ha'er'bin(the capital of Heilongjiang province) or Changchun(the capital of Jilin province) is the suitable place.

by the way, Ha'er'bin and Changchun are smaller than BeiJing, cold in winter, you can ski or skate there. also you can view ice sculptures in " the ice days". poeple there are unsophisticated. As to Beijing, i think you may have already got some knowlege on it.

GUEST09174 In terms of online Chinese, you can't beat Chinesepod.com. During my first year in China I learned a lot of practical vocabulary from them via my ipod while riding subways and trains.

If you want to learn authentic Mandarin, Beijing is your best bet. China is full of regional dialects and accents. Shanghai speak Shanghaiese, people in Guangdong speak Cantonese, and so on.

Beijing is seen as most prestigious center of Mandarin instruction....most people will tell you to come here rather than have your learning affected by local dialects and accent.

If you are looking for a good Mandarin School, I can vouch for Global Exchange Center, located in Beijing's Haidian district. (www.glexchange.net). I have been taking intensive Chinese courses with them for almost a month now and have seen quick improvement. Next month they'll place me in host family, which is exciting for me because I'll have a lot of daily practice.
