A retired couple Tom and Rita Glenister swear that they would rather go to jail than pay the 2012 Olympics surcharge on their council tax bill.

London has a tight budget on the 2012 Olympics. To cover the cost of the London Games, London’s council imposed £33.33 on London homes. Tom and Rita, at the age of 78 and 76 respectively, think it is unfair that London Council taxpayers are the only people who directly pay for the Games while the British PM touted that the whole country will benefit form the Games. Why not other cities’ council taxpayers? If they were convicted, they would face up to three months in jai.

Who should pay for the 2012 London Olympic Games? £33 is only a small sum of money but the retired couple says it is a matter of principle.

Tom and Rita says it is a matter of principle. They will go to jail rather than pay £33.33 games tax.

How will London's Olympic Stadium look? London probably aims to match or even surpass Beijing.
How high is the price if London wants such a stadium to outshine Bird's Nest?

No one (including anyone in the UK) is under the illusion that the 2012 stadium will be able to compete with the Bird's Nest which is widely recognised as the world's best stadium.

I think it is ridiculous to tax people to pay for the games. The British Government bid for the games, so they should pay for them. What makes me laugh about this is the way the British media have constantly told stories of how the Chinese government dictates to its people, evicting them from their houses to make way for Olympic construction, etc. Now the British government are forcing London people to pay for something many don't want. What is the difference? Hypocrisy knows no bounds when it comes the the western media.

What is the difference? The difference is that the British people live in a society based upon the Rule of Law, which means that citizens can contest, in a court of law, the actions of their government, which in this case is the imposition by the London City Council of an "Olympic Games Tax" of 33.33 Pds / home. This law suit will center around whether or not the London City Council has the power to impose such a tax. If not, the Council must find other ways to raise the money. Either way, the taxpayers will pay, since Government money is the people's money.

"Hypocrisy knows no bounds when it comes the the western media. "

Western media hold "Double standards". They have always been lenient for themselves but hard on others.

So far, it is IOC's fault to give the right of hosting 2012 Summer Olympics to London.

From what I heard from many British, they are not interested in matching or surpassing Beijing so I think you are trying to compete with someone who is not interested in competing. Many don’t even want to host it. They already hosted the Olympics before and this time, many think it is just a waste of money. A lot don’t want to have anything to do with it. The couple mentioned is just one of them.

GUEST91204 Living in North West of England I am sure if Olympics was up North we would all be happy paying extra tax. Seeing that it is London we will not be happy paying tax. London drains all resources from us Northerners. Do the Southern numptys who run this country know that the North of England is part of country too.

Stop moanining Southern softies and pay your tax.
