Barron, it looks like Lions 2… Christian Nil so far. You could be onto something here. We’d probably need a little more detail before we could put it to a vote though. Dodger.

Dodger. What details do you want? Killing method - nailed to a cross. When - asap.

Barron, you know the old saying; the devils in the detail. It need fleshing out otherwise it just not going to get passed the Board. The floor to your well thought out strategy is that they would have to break commandment number 5. That means that half of them would go to hell, which may cause a lack of motivation by some. I suppose we can at least thank our lucky stars that the old git slipped on his beard on the way down and dropped two of the tablets leaving us just the ten. Time frame? Lunch time (Beijing time.) That gives us all a chance to review and then vote this evening. Well done though. Keep it up. Dodger PR Department. Starlag VII

Ok - hadn't seen the problem with commandment No 5. How about we (me and you) just round them all up and burn them? We could put them into the power station incinerators as fuel. We could then use their bibles as toilet paper and save a few trees. There was a quote from a Christian preacher which I read the other day - "We should chop down every last tree, eat every last fish, and take full advantage of the land given to us as a gift from God". This is the kind of stuff which makes me believe that Christianity is the major problem in the world today. Idiots.

As a Westerner raised on Hollywood movies I am shocked to see a popular Chinese film like "Hero" or "Crouching Tiger,Hidden Dragon" depict lead characters committing suicide. Long ago Hollywood found that audiences liked happy endings and not depressing stories. I saw a VCD of dancing girls and my wife explained the story of the red ribbon and that the girls father committed suicide over debt. If suicide is depicted as acceptable or expected in some situations then impressionable minds might follow. Perhaps a public awareness program of alternatives to suicide would help. I guess the first thing to do would be to gather statistics of what reasons are known for these drastic actions and try to address the issues.

Yinduffy - if Hollywood movies are supposed to be inspirational, why do 99% of them have guns, car chases, and crime? I think any Chinese movie is far more morally responsible. Anyway, it is a well known fact that a majority of Hollywood movies are marketed for their target audience, which is 18 year old males. If you look at the suicide rates, more males commit suicide in the US than they do in China. It is the females who are the concern in China. In fact, China is the only country in the world where more females kill themselves than males. This is largely (probably solely) down to controlling fathers and husbands. China is not particularly bad by world standards however. Eastern Europe seems to be the worst affected place, with 2 or 3 times the suicide rate of China (per capita)

I certainly get the impression that historically suicide has and is an exemptible way out in China. There are no religious doctrines that tell them that this is evil and their soul will dwell in purgatory for ever. It doesn’t carry the losers tag. It does not have the same stigma attached to it as westerners have, and that is one huge cultural difference How many times do you read of generals past who had lost battle and are then requested to hang themselves as an honorable way out for their families and for themselves? Women in China today still feel a tremendous loss of face when their husbands divorce them. Something that we in the West will never fully comprehend. I could of course be totally wrong in my thinking on this subject. Dodger.

Barontwa, Hollywood movies show guns, car chases and crime but the bad guys always get caught in the end. The cops chasing the bad guys don't commit suicide because the courts let the criminal out on a technicality! Life goes on! Even the bad guys don't commit suicide when they are caught or their plans defeated. Dodger is right in that many girls feel pressure that their peers impose. There was a recent case in the U.S. where a teenage girl killed herself because her internet chat friends humiliated her and suggested she end it all. She did.

Just going back to the topic of suicide rates in China again; this equates to approximately 625 jumbo jets crashing every year with an average load of 400 passengers. If this was the case, and this example could be used in any country, it would cause such a public outcry that all governments would be forced into seriously looking at their mental health programs. Another example; if every suicide was on average 1.5 meters tall and you laid them end to end they would stretch to a distance of 375 kilometer. Dodger.

Dodger - I think the suicide figure which is being suggested here is running away from reality. In the initial thread, it was mentioned that "about 250,000" people in China kill themselves annually. For any Americans - this doesn't mean the same people kill themselves every year - it means that in one year this is how many people kill themselves! Then in the next comment the figure magically jumps to 520,000! Not even the western media dramatise a Chinese story that much! According the the World Health Organisation, the figure is 182,000. China's male suicide rate is among the lowest in the world, but the high female rate pushes them to just above average. As I mentioned before, China is the only country in the world to have a higher female to male suicide rate. Maybe it's a way of keeping the population under control. The males kill themselves by smoking, and the females just kill themselves by er..... well..... killing themselves! Now I have just been out to buy a bible, and am frantically searching for a passage which may have been overlooked in the past where it says something like "Thou shall ascend directly to eternal heaven, passing St Peter and the Pearly Gates to a rapturous applause by all the other saints, if one shall only take ones life in the most painful way possible". I haven't found it yet, but I am hopeful it is in there somewhere. I'll inform all the American news channels once I have found it, and then we can all have a good time watching a billion people entertain us with their imaginations!
