Why do the employers care about girls’ body shape?

There is a craze for losing weight among Chinese young girls because body shape matters in Chinese job market. Fashion police constantly tell girls that slim girls are popular. Your good body shape is an advantage for you. In job market, the interviewers are now critical on girls’ body shape. So the senior female college students were speeding up their efforts in losing-weight campaign in the final year of their college lives. Is this weird phenomenon commonly seen in else part of the world? Do Chinese employers are allowed to discriminate on body shape? Why do the employers care about girls’ body shape?

Yes it is discrimination and it is probably prevalent in most societies.
Just ask my 200kg. wife.....and she's mean too!!
IMO...Most employers hire women with good body shape in order for the employer(s) to supposedly maintain their good image. I.E. they hire image more than brains.

Image is very important for some jobs. The air hostesses must have good body shape. Today, "image sells well all over the world."

Image establishment is based on excellent products and after market service.

The models in the pictures is Korean girls and half of Korean girls I hear receive plastic surgery and the face was made from the same mode.

If you serve in front desk, the fat girl could attract more customers in weight watch business.

if you apply for jobs requiring skills, having body shape with out required brain power will be finally screened out because a private corp would never ever keep a dumb without value.

I know Chinese girls who work in IT, financial accounting, running their own stores, pubs. they are not stunning beautiful but they care image - clean, proper dressed and makeup, which indicates respect selves, customers and co-workers.

Awww.. heck, I am in Seoul right now and not a lot look like the models and actresses you see on TV.

GUEST6936 Employers who assess employees on appearance will go bankruptcy sooner or later. It's lucky that you are not employed by the ignorant bosses. Nevertheless, employers are allowed to discriminate on ability.

GUESTHAMES A group of former 'plumb-fat' flight stewardesses of Indian Airlines sued the airline for wrongful dismissal (Air Indian said they were too fat) but the judge ruled in favour of the airline stating that the image of the airline is paramount and that fat stewardesses take up too much aisle space... hahaha... i think it was a shrewd decision. Those fatties got nothing!

Re: your question - i suppose it depends on the nature of the profession/job and the type of company. I for one who not like to see fat girls behind a hotel's frontdesks for instance; nor would i want to be served by fat waitresses.

In many instances, 'image is everything' sometimes.

That's a smart decision ruled by the judge. If I were in the jury, I would add one point: the planes fly in the sky, so the crew and stewardesses should not too weighty;otherwise, the planes are likely to drop on the earth.
