![]() | Coolsprings mentions that gambling is a Chinese hobby. In an area of a large city where I lived for a while the community consisted of closely built 6 story apartment blocks. Several of the ground floor apartments were like garages or shops with roller shutter doors. From afternoon to quite late at night these turned into what looked like small "gambling dens" with men and women of all ages playing card games and mahjong. In winter they would still have the shutters open but have gas heaters close by. I even saw a woman discretly breast feeding a child while playing. Of course I didn't see any money, they were probably playing for peanuts ;o) |

![]() | Of course I didn't see any money, they were probably playing for peanuts ;o) Gaffer, they might gamble. I heard some guys playing mahjong just for winning cigarettes. Actually, they didn't play for cigarettes. One cigarette meant some amount of money, for example, 5 yuan or 10 yuan. At the end, they exchanged their cigarettes for money. Do you know why they didn't place money on the table? If they were caught by the police with money on the table, they would be detained or fined. Without money on the table, the police couldn't do anything about them. |
