Kevin, get your self a copy of the visa application form. I think you can get them on line.
Read through it carefully. It’s actually the form for all four types of visa’s, so if you do tick the wrong box you can end up almost inadvertently for the wrong visa.
Also note it needs to be filled in in English.
My gut feel says she will not receive a tourist visa traveling on her own but would have a better chance traveling with a group.
The company that run the visa process do give advice. They seemed quite human in Beijing.

This line caught my eye Dodger and jumped out at me.
Are you referring to one specific company here, when you say this?

I was under the impression that only governments "run the visa process"?
The Canadian Embassy in China for Canadian visas, British Embassy in China for British visas etc.

To be sure, in Canada we have tons of 'immigration consultants', but that's a whole different kettle of fish.
These are certainly companies/businesses.

“VFS Global is a commercial company, working in partnership with UKBA and the British Embassy here in China providing services to help people apply for UK visas.

VFS also manages Visa Application Centres for UKBA here in China, where you should submit your application, your biometric fingerscans and pay the application fee. The address details of the VACs can be found in the Contact Us section of this website.

Your visa application will be processed and decided by UKBA staff. Neither VFS, nor any of our staff, play any part in or influence the outcome of your visa application.

If any member of our staff claims to be able to influence your application, you should inform the nearest British diplomatic mission as soon as possible.”

Canadaguy, it looks like they have farmed out most of the process. There was a box that I/She had missed and they were most helpful.

OK, so they sound like the myriad of 'immigration consultants' we have here in Canada.
At least they are up front with what they can and cannot do.

GUEST36147 OK, i also looked into this, i have a Chinese wife, and we recently came to england to visit family for Christmas, the tourist bit was really easy.

in regards to ur being more permanent in England, right now 2 things, first of all financial support, second of all, providing a roof over her head...

if u have a job/career, the best way to look into this is that you must show enough support, the best way is to show that you have an excess of 60.50 (soon to change to 65.50 in April, as this is the government regulations, ie if u were on benefits like JSA ur minimum expected amount to survive is this amount) this is an excess after you have paid for all your usual bills each week. for example, if ur bills al come to 600pounds a month, then u would need at least 240pounds spare each month, more is better....its only a guide line, but if u have this much spare after all bills are paid it shows excess that could be used towards a partners upkeep and bills. in many cases wife's especially are allowed to work but check first, deportation if caught is definite in cases i have heard of....

secondly, accommodation, this is a bit fuzy, but if you refer to the housing act of 1985 it says that the minimum space for 2 people ie married living together is a room of 50square feet, this must only be used by yourself and wife/partner, though i have heard it recommended that even if u have a room of this size in a shared house, it would possibly not bode well, and though theoretically big family homes may be ok, u should aim for a 1/2 bed house apartment/flat that is urs alone...

having friends in the community could help with things like jobs and information, but expect that in the Asian culture a favour means a bigger favour back in return sometimes, try your best to rely upon ur own wits in this case, it could be detrimental to ur application if they found that you as a partner were not supporting her, they my believe she is only here for work, and be deported soon after

on the other hand if like me, convincing ur doctor wife she could possibly have a better life in England might be the only problem then everything else pales by comparison, if anyone could help me with this..........

from all the people i have met, its seems that the best way if u can is to visit and marry in her country, then bring her back to England, as long as you have fullfilled the above points, and been doing them for 6 months or more you will stand a fighting chance..... good luck, to all

GUEST23510 Hi Guye
Its been an interesting read i wonder in fact if any of you are still accessing this forum as the last entry was a while ago now?
can anyone shine some light on my situation?
I have known my Chinese Wife for 4 years been married 1.5 years [in china] We have decided to travel to uk to assess the possibilities to live, however i have obviously been working in China [as a teacher these years] How do we go about this in ''The simpler way'' if there is one.
The family option sponsorship is not on the playing field, and everything else on the official websites seem to only suggest me working / having a property [history of rental or ownership home] in the UK to allow her access to travel as either a family or visitor traveller, this highly impossible as i work in china still [freelancer]
I have some funds to support us for quite a year or so, so what or how do i break this this catch 22??
Am i left to get there find work? Wait 3 months or so before i have sufficient documentation to support our application???
Our aim is to set up our own small business in the hope that is succeeds, or if push comes to shove I find work to provide, I am realistic about this.
Any input from anyone would be much appreciated
christopher
