I am Garmin (GPS) dealer, I hope I don't break the rule here in this website, coz i've post a thread in 'Ads'.

And I was wondering if you are crazy about traveling, will you consider getting a GPS along with you, I do want to expand my scope of my business and help more guys who are thinking the Garmin GPS is useful for them.

Thank you for your response in advance!

I use a GPS all the time in the UK, usually very succesfully, but they are solely dependant on good mapping. Are Chinese GPS only in Chinese language (voice and dispay). Do they cover all areas, rural and cities? Even finding a good Chinese map in English is very difficult.

Thank you for your questions. Actually English language version is also available in China, all Garmin GPS which are on sale in China marketplace can be toggled freely between English and Chinese, as what you use in UK, when you drive the car the Garmin GPS can guide you with turn arrows, vocal prompts (English or Chinese is available), and instruction text on the top of the screen ( English or Chinese is available).

And now the China map for Garmin GPS covers almost all areas, including rurals and cities, you can even search the location by entering 'house number' in Beijing, Shanghai and Changchun, the house number is in the middle of collecting, more and more places can be searched by house number' in the near future .

As for the Chinese map in English, Garmin has its own map provider, it's Nav2, NAV2 is a Shanghai-based joint venture between two mapping leaders, NavInfo and NAVTEQ. (more info : http://www.nav2.com.cn/en/index.asp). So we guarantee the quality of the map, I am not say it has no errors, but I can say safely it's much better than ever before, and the accuracy is much higher. But I have got to say one thing though, the menu and instructions are all described in English, while the street names are described in Chinese pinyin. For example, if you wanna find "Shang hai city", you gotta enter " Shang hai shi", "shi" represents " city", I think it's no biggie even for a foreigner here.

I have not less than 200 foreign customers here in Shanghai, and most of them are satisfied with its performance and Garmin GPS make their life more easier.
For information about Garmin products in China you can find at : www.vttown.cn ('Garmin shop' is a section focus on products of Garmin)

I never use a GPS. I use the good old map. If I am going somewhere, I download maps from Yahoo maps and Mapquest.

Neither am I. Most street walkers still bank on the good old roadmaps. Maybe, to my thinking, GPS is good for drivers. Last Christmas, when my friend wanted to know the way from TST East to Wan Chai he just spread the good old roadmap of HK then we walked from the Avenue of Stars to Star Ferry Terminal to Wan Chai. The same for SZ and GZ. As these roadmaps are given free, and GPS is not that cheap not really affordable by many, I'm sure roadmaps are here to stay for a longer time.
