I was there in November and again in December and I must tell you I don't recommend it. Very polluted, very loud and very dirty. Now I've traveled extensively in China and as a westerner, have learned to put up with pit toilets, spitting, agressive vendors, pick pockets, and just about every other Chinese nuisance, but Anping has got to be the dirtiest, smelliest, ugliest city in China. Maybe I'm wrong. Change my mind.

You sound like the American sailors I worked with on board merchant ships, FIDLA, their only comment in every port of call was "poor bastards." China is an emerging country that holds serious prospects of dwarfing US economic influence in a decade or two. ...further, China's culture, history and philosophy is long and deep; it may have the depth to help the world cope with the problems faced as the entire world wrestles with the issues of a planet where all people are consumers. To enjoy travel in an emerging country, you must have an open mind...something your liberal education in Boston must have scuttled. As a member of this community, you have made two posts - both of them derogatory. As a fellow countryman your attitude is embarrassing to me. ...and BTW coming from Boston, I am surprised you have issues with the cleanliness of Chinese toilet facilities. Having worked in Boston on multiple ocassions, I'd say the conditions are about equal.

Curious to hear these comments. i admit to turning upmy nose and almost gaging on the smell of a squat box or worse a village outhouse but I've seen worse (absolutely disgusting and deliberate) in the poorer suburbs of my city back home. I've had to walk out and hang on 'til I found to somewhere cleaner to use. We all have our gripes about China but lets face it, each of our nations has it's fair share of problems and we need to own up to them. Pollution, growing numbers of homeless, racism and poverty, drug abouse and much more. It's all there if we care to look for it but I feel safer here than I do in many other locations and I just love travelling. You never know what to expect next.

I have had the misfortune of going to Anping as well. When life gives you a choice of Anping or death, choose death. Anping is a typical northern city, in the fact that anything and everything interesting about it was torn apart in the 60s and 70s and left with the standard socialist look... and then left to deteriorate. However, there is literally nothing there. I spent 2 long days in the city and came to a quick decision to escape as soon as I could and never go back. There is a reason why they try to offer foreigners 7000 a month to teach English there, it is because there is nothing whatsoever to do. The town actually has no bars or KTV (legitimate or otherwise). There is nothing there apart from pigs, wire mesh and the smell. I have lived in China for 3 years now and have experienced many levels of life. From rural sichuan suburb to Shanghai and Beijing... and NEVER have I been so revolted by a place in my entire life. It was a 2-day English gig that I did for some extra money, I will admit that freely... however the agency was careful to not mention the actual location until I was already there and the ride was gone and I found myself in a musty room with a broken leaky air conditioner with a filthy towel, no soap and a used toothbrush. This was the ONLY hotel in town at the time. The OP is 100% accurate, Anping is possibly the filthiest, smelliest, ugliest city in China. Apologies if you live there and are reading this, I hope you escape soon.

Perhaps if you look deeper... Were the people respectful, kind, helpful? When you left, did you leave some enhancements or improvements?
