In responding to my thread, Mandarin orange in the Chinese Food section, Katrina wrote : In mainland, Chinese Valentine Day falls on July 7th on lunar calendar. It has something to do with a legend " the Cowherd and the Girl Weaver".

The legend about the Cowherd and the Girl Weaver, has been told through oral tradition, and the story varies. Similar story has been told in other races and nations with varied versions.

Of recent (in mainland China), the July 7th of the lunar calendar is dubbed as Chinese Valentine's Day. Do you celebrate Hungry Ghost in July (according to lunar calendar)? How about Tanglung festival, mooncake festival, etc? It's a lot to learn about Chinese culture and ancestral beliefs which can be disseminated and shared.

Actually, the Lantern Festival, January 15 on the lunar calendar is the real Chinese traditional Valentine's day.

GUEST7549 I also heard this: Lunar Jan 15 is Chinese traditional Valentines' Day. However, I don't know anything about its origin.

Chinese Valentine's Day falls on the Senth Day of the Seventh Month according to Chinese Lunar Calendar. Chinese Valentines' Day has been overwhelmed by western Valentine's Day. Tomorrow is Valentine's Day. You will see how many Chinese celebrate the holiday: while wait until the July 7th(Lunar Calendar), few Chinese will celebrate the Qixi Festival.

Is that just another example of Chinese traditions being overshadowed by commercialism again?
