GUEST42131 my son married a lao girl a year ago and her mother just passed away over there. Our daughter in law can't go back but had a dinner with people coming in and out; they had to donate money. Is the money donation a tradition? I didn't find anything that talked about money only a picture of money hanging like a tree.

I do not know the traditions in Laos. In my hometown, the families burn "money trees" made of paper to the dead, wishing they had enough money to use in another world. Before the funeral, a feast is held and almost all relatives, friends and neighbors came to eat and gave money to the dead's family. It's not donation, just payment for the meal.
