GUESTCIA if you dont like the way Chinese banks operate, you are free to move, or don't come back. last time i checked, foreign banks did not give any special privaleges to Chinese citizens.

GUEST07170 I am a foreigner working in Beijing and I successfully gotten a Citic Bank Platinum credit card co-branded with Air China, as well as a Citic Bank Amex card. All I had to produce was a copy of my passport, a copy of my visa, and a letter from my employer stating that I earn xxxxxx amount annually. I do not have an apt or a car in China.

I feel that it is much easier to get a credit card from Citic Bank than other banks. CMB and BOC rejected my application eventhough I produced the same documents. But be warned though, I heard that Citic Bank has the highest annual fee and interest on carried-forward balances amongst all the local banks.

GUESTKRISTINE I tried to apply for a credit card in Bank of Communication Zhengzhou branch and the receptionist said that i need to have a citizen's ID before i can get a Credit card. I guess a passpport is not enough ID for them. So yes, getting a credit card for a foreigner in China is hard.

GUEST4576 GUESTKRISTINE,

It’s true that foreigners can not apply a Chinese credit card easily. The requirements vary from bank to bank. But it doesn’t mean that you have no chance to get one.

You have your passport but do you have a job in China? By the way, you have to show your bank statement (US bank account is ok) and residence permit. I am not sure if they other requirements.

I suggest you try another bank. It is said that China Merchants Bank has lower requirements. The state-owned banks like Bank of China, China Construction Bank, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and Agricultural Bank of China are better than those commercial banks.

GUEST84105 Yes, I had the same problem last year. I went to BOC to apply for a visa/master card logo on my debit card with my account they say can't be done but I heard it can be done for foreigners but it's hard. This is so messed up. It is difficult to buy things on line with even with an online banking token and china cell phone for sms codes etc and you can forget about paying for airline tickets on line either with a US credit card or the BOC debit it's a scam to get our USA money which is easily taken from our US credit cards through their ATM and it's easy to deposit US or GBP and then wire money home but forget about wiring RMB that convert to US so messed up. In the US you can withdraw from your BOC debit at BOA and acourse get US with a high exchange rate but better than nothing.
I think we should treat Chinese citizens the same in our countries when they are working, visiting, or studying there. They don't want us to make money off them or rather what we make to only spend it here. The game is to exchange money to US or GBP deposit it then wire it back to your US or UK bank account which you carry with a visa logo. Yuo can't get good prices for airline tickets because they won't le tyou pay on line for it

GUEST84105 I think we should play the same game. But our banks branch out to give everyone in the world a chance at a credit card grrrrrrr this is just messed up...But China won't give foreigners living and working here for more than a year a credit card not even a debit card with a visa/master card logo to access their own money in the bank..Come on wake up guys, what's going on here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GUEST12190 Some really great companies have begun shipping to China, but most only permit credit card purchases, no bank transfers. So now that they ship to China, I still can't get deliveries from companies whose goods I need to survive in China which China does not offer here. And there is apparently no way to get a credit card, which is totally ludicrous, I've lived and worked her for 4 years, they should trust me by now.
