In my opinion, 2-3 days max is enough for Dali. It's a great place to relax, explore the old town, take a bike ride to the lake...but, for me, it gets old after awhile. It depends on what you want from your vacation. If you're the more active type, then I wouldn't plan a whole chunk of time in Dali. I agree with Ellyse...you need to provide more info about what you want/your restrictions before others can give you more helpful advice. Kunming's a great base city for travel and also a good place to relax after traveling in more remote areas as most western conveniences can be found in Kunming.

GUEST20852 Thank you for your feedback.

I am fairly fit and want to see it all. However I guess I will leave out DALI and spend more time in and around Kunming now and rather than take the train direct to Shanghai take an internal plane flight and save more time.

I assume the train trip Kunming to Shanghai does not have much to see en-route? Does anyone know if the 36 hours trip is worth it?

What cheap plane travels/flights from Kunming to Shanghai. Any ideas or recommendations?

Thanks to ALL of you for your input.

"See it all" isn't practical, given your time constraints. Unless you're a Chinese tour-bus traveller who hops out of the bus at each sight, takes the obligatory photo and then back on the bus to the next place.
I would take Spring Airlines for Kunming -- Shanghai, there're some good deals to be had if you book in advance... but you need a Chinese bank card with e-banking enabled, in order to buy tickets.
