advice needed

I'm planning to travel to China in October 09 with friends. The trip is planned for about 10 days, not more. The places on our list are:

Shanghai
Suzhou
Huangshan
Jiuhuashan
Hangzhou
Putuoshan

There are two rough itineraries that we have drawn up.

Itinerary 1:

Day 1: Shanghai, check in at hotel
Day 2: Shanghai to Hangzhou by train, check in at hotel, spend whole day
Day 3: Hangzhou to Huangshan by bus, spend day, go to Jiuhuashan by car and check in at hotel
Day 4: Spend day in Jiuhuashan, return to Hangzhou via Huangshan
Day 5: Spend day in Hangzhou
Day 6: Back to Shanghai

After this we'll have three/four more days when we'd like to see Suzhou and Putuoshan. We don't know how to accomodate that.

Itinerary 2:

Day 1: Shanghai: Night at hotel
Day 2: Morning bus to Suzhou, evening train to Huangshan
Day 3: Reach Huangshan at 9 am, sightsee, go to Jiuhuashan by car, Night at hotel
Day 4: See Jiuhuashan whole day, take bus from Huangshan, reach hangzhou at around 7 pm
Day 5: Hangzhou, spend whole day
Day 6: Shanghai

After this we'll have three/four more days when we'd like to see Putuoshan. We don't know how to accomodate that.

I'd like to know if either one of these are doable. Will they become too hectic? Please advise how to go to Putuoshan. All our palns are based on information gathered from the net so please help in taking the most economical (both time and money wise) route.

You're trying to do way too much in 10 days. Even if you're very good hikers, this isn't enough time.
I would advise you to do Shanghai, Suzhou, Huangshan and Hangzhou, and leave out Jiuhuashan and Putuoshan. If you have specific reasons for wanting to include these 2 other destinations, please clarify.
What time will you be arriving and departing from Shanghai?
Also, what dates in October will you be travelling?

you may feel bored for too many mountain climbing activities!

Huangshan should be your number one choice,

by the way, I would suggest you to spend two days to pay a visit to ancient town such as "Zhouzhuang" village or "Xitang" ancient town around Suzhou or Hangzhou.

shanghai 2 days
suzhou 2 days
huangshan 2 days
hangzhou 2 days
ancient town 2 days

just leave yourself enough time to enjoy the trip

Thanks for your advice. Do we visit the places in that order? We are especially interested in Jiuhuashan. Can that be done from Huangshan easily or can we skip Huangshan altogether? What is the mode of transport til Jiuhuashan?

GUEST22731 You are quite right. In the frenzy of activities we often end up being tired and drained on a trip. Have you got any suggestion about Tong Li? It was recommeneded to me by a friend who has visited.

Huangshan is probably the most worthwhile mountain to visit in this area. If you're interested in mountains at all, I would not skip this one.
2 days for a water village might be a bit too much, though I would certainly stay overnight. Don't bother with Zhouzhuang as it's too touristy; Tongli or Xitang would be fine.
I don't think that would be the best order of itinerary for your trip, and not the most ideal number of days in each destination either.

Sorry that I didnt make it clear; the above destinations & number of days are not the order of itinerary, just the rough number of days suggested including the time spends on the vehicle.

Just visit any places you like, Jiuhuashan is also a nice place, it is the the most worshipped sacred place in China, u can truely experience the Buddhism culture there, or u may wanna pray & make a nice wish there haha

There is a direct tour bus from Huangshan to Jiuhuashan, and it may take 1.5 - 2 hrs.

As Ellyse suggested that both Tongli & Xitang are worth to pay a visit, so it would be fine if u choose Tongli.

no worries dude~~~~ mostly takes about 2.5 hrs~~~~~business hour: early morning to early afternoon

GUEST22565 Hi, any idea how frequent this bus is and when the last bus leaves? We are planning to see Huangshan not too extensively and spend night at hotel in Jiuhuashan. Actually, Jiuhuashan is our main interest, not for any religious reason though. :)

i would suggest you to climb Huangshan early in the morning to see the sunrise and take the early aftertnoon bus (befor 2:30) to Jiuhuashan, and you can check the time & bus frequency right after you settle down in Huangshan area.
