I have mostly found Chinese to be extremely gullible. They can be very childlike. Conversely I find most westerners skeptical and distrusting.

For many reasons, some inexplicable to westerners, Chinese people avoid confrontation so are reluctant to say what they think. I agree there are separate public and private personas but even in private, "maybe" means "no" and "yes" means "maybe".

Bobert, Chinese people are not as gullible as you think. Just have a look at this thread:http://community.travelchinaguide.com/forum2.asp?i=34321

How many foreigners have been cheated? As a Chinese, I am ashamed of them. Well, I have to say that there are a lot of good people too. Not long ago, three college students lost their lives to save a child who fell into the river. These guys are really good guys. But something very disgusting happened. I might start a new thread to discuss about this.

If a scam is good enough then almost anybody is capable of being deceived and conned. However you are right LONELYJOE, gullibility is not limited to Chinese people. Perhaps I should have said "naive" instead.

I haven’t met any gullible Chinese people in all the years that I have been traveling here.
In general, I have been the recipient of extreme kindness.
A few weeks ago I had to attend a meeting out in the sticks. I took the wrong turnoff from the highway and became totally lost. Even my GPS told me in an awful LA accent.” Sorry Dodger, it looks like your buggered mate”, when a bloke stopped on his motor bike, read the address that I had crumpled into my tiny hand and said follow me.
And so I did; for the next 15 K’s.
He refused any payment, and by the look of his bike he could have used it.
“Chinese people avoid confrontation” I’ve witnessed plenty of confrontation.
I think the avoidance of saying yes and no is more a case of etiquette.
I’m involved in a small project at the moment and had to make it very clear from the start that if the teams estimated deadlines could not be met then they had to say so, no shame , no loss of face.

Dave, be careful with your videos and better keep them in a safe place. After Edison Chen's photo scandal, people become very careful with their computers. Any private things on your hard disk should be kept very well. The easiest way is Don't shoot any private photos or videos.
