where to go after hong kong

guestAnna I was wondering if anyone had any tips on places to travel to in china after Hong Kong?

My boyfriend and I are going to Hong Kong in 3 days, to spend a week there. We are starting jobs in South Korea in mid march and plan to travel china by rail until then. Our plan was to book our accomodation and travel to each place a week or 2 in advance. We thought as a very loose route over the 2 months, we may go Hong Kong, Xi an, Shanghai then Beijing - visiting plenty places in between.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or experiences of doing a similar route? We would like to experience a variety of types of areas and would love to hear any suggestions of where to start after hong kong, bearing in mind we would like to travel by rail mainly.

What are your basic sightseeing interests and preferences?
Any daily budget to keep to?
Where will you be leaving to Korea from?
What's your level of Chinese like?
From now till mid-March is the WORST time to travel by train, you might not even be able to get tickets!
