If you had 10 days in August to travel from Xi'an to Shanghai, which 2 or maximum 3 places would you stop at and why? All suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hmm.. the first two, Xi'an and Shanghai...^-^
Then between the two cities... I will do Datong or Luoyang for grotto... Then possibly, Yuntai Mountain which is also in Henan province. Then Nanjing-Yangzhou-Zhenjiang or Wuxi-Suzhou for the "south beauty", I mean the sights... From that, you could get the chance to experience the ancient culture in Xi'an, typical northern city, then some magnificent architecture in religion, some southern cities which are completely different from the north, and then a modern and busy city.. So that you would get a comprehensive understanding... But to be honest, I could stay at Xi'an for a very long time and won't get boring at all...

Thank's a lot, HERBEAT!

I will check the places you suggested. Alltogether we will be in China for one month, flying in to Beijing and out of Shanghai. About 20 days are dedicated to Beijing, possibly Pingyao, Xi'an and Shanghai and 10 days for travel from Xi'an to Shanghai with 2, maximum 3 stops, on the way.

What about the accomodation situation in China mid August - mid September? I'ven been to China once before but that is 20 years ago. I will meet a completely different country in many aspects and I am really looking forward to it. At that time I travelled for 2 months and it was never any problem finding accomodation upon arrival in a city, not even in traveler's spots like Lijiang, Dali and Beijing. Since we don't like to be tied up to a plan we don't want to book any accomodations in advance apart from in Beijing. How is it nowdays? We stick to budget accomodation but have these days money enough to pay for rooms so dormitory beds are history! ;-)

If you let us know more about your sightseeing interests and preferences, as well as what other places you've got on your itinerary already, then it might be easier for us to suggest what would fit YOU more. Otherwise I can only give you places that're somewhat geographically suitable and what I find interesting. One man's meat is another's poison.

We are interested in most things apart from hiking, fishing and beach bumming.

We prefere a city with charachter and atmosphere before a city just dotted with sights. Please, don't misunderstand me, often these two are no contradictions but I think you get my point. We love cities where you can just hang around/walk around aimlessly rather than seeing a lot of "must see sights". We do visit museums and temples on our travels but they are not our main interests. More interested in markets, tea houses/coffee shops with nice settings and athmosphere, daily street life, architecture and FOOD! Hate shopping.

Beautiful scenery is of course always nice but for us it is enough to see it from a train or bus window on our way from A to B. Hardly never do daytrips to water falls or lakes and such. Have seen a lot of water falls in my life. ;-)

Love train travel, hate flying.

Beijing and Shanghai are given since we fly in/out of these two cities. Xi'an is also more or less given in our itinerary. I have visited both Beijing and Shanghai before but that was TWENTY years ago. I guess I will recognize the Forbidden City and The Bund but that will probably be it! For my friend it is his first trip to China.

Hehe, same here, also a great fun of hiking and beach. In fact tonight I miss the beach walking a lot... When I was in Yantai, I love to talk a walk along the beach in late afternoon, enjoy the warm and soft sunshine, blue sky and fresh air, hear the sound of the waves but all are in peaceful... It's fantastic... I guess I miss it a lot becase the weather here in Beijing is also lovely these two days and makes me willing to go out...

Since you would arrive at Beijing, the great wall hiking would be great - there are so many different part of the Great Wall so you wont need to repeat the one as you did last time. One problem is that in August it would be very hot here..

As you mentioned, you love the beach. Then I think Qinhuangdao which is not far away from Beijing would be a good choice for you. Or if you don't mind going a bit far, Qingdao, Weihai and Yantai would be a lot better... Qingdao is very famous for the beach. What's more, there's some unique architecture with the style in Germany Williams period - You can't even find it in Europe... It's a modern city. Well, not as modern as Shanghai but still... However, I walked along a narrow road which leads to a hill once when I was there, all of a sudden I forgot all the noisy world and fall into peacufulness... Weihai is such a nice and clean but small city. You'll never know how much I love the beach there... Yantai is also good...

Anyway, if you don't want to go that far, on your way from Xi'an to Shanghai you could go to Rizhao, also a coastal city...

When you are in Xi'an, Huashan would be a nice place for hiking... And since it's a VERY GOOD place for food, you might want to do a bit advanture to find the most original place for snacks... I did that and I think I would NEVER forget... Such a wonderful experience...

When I gave the last suggestion, I considered the similarity of the sights in different cities... That's why I gave those cities.. follow that way, each city would be different and you won't get boring...

Since you are going to go to Pingyao, I still think a waterfull called Hukou along the Yellow river would be a great memory... It's not any of the other waterfalls...It seems we have some same interests.. I also plan to go to Pingyao someday. What's more, if you are a fun of food made from wheat, I suggest you go to Jinzhong, which is not far from pingyao...

When you are in Beijing, I suggest you to go to a place called Houhai and Nanluoguxiang which is not far from the Drum-tower... I'm also someone who hardly has interests in sightseeings but also to hang around.. The place I just mention is somewhere I like to walk along and don't get bored no matter how many times I go... also Sanlitun area and somewhere called the PLACE and Lansegangwan... Fun places in Beijing which would give you totally a different idea of what you got 20 years ago...

The accomodation wouldn't be such a big problem but during mid August - mid September, I'm afraid it's time to finish the summer vacation and there would be huge number of students taking train back to their school... So I suggest you do some pre-work for that... I would highly recommend booking the tickets in advance...

Anyway, just realized I might have said too much... Sorry.. Just made some similar plan for one of the best friends..

If you have any question, feel free to let me know... I'm in Beijing but know as cities as well... What's more, have friends in Shanghai who loves to help people too...

Welcome back to China again^-^
