HERBEAT,

Thank you SO much for all your efforts and advices! Greatly appreciated!

When you mentioned Qingdao, Weihai and Yantai a new idea popped up! I really like coastal cities even though I am not particularly interested in beaches. ;-) But I do love the ocean. So a completely different route could be Beijing - Tianjin - Yantai - Weihai - Qingdao (which I did visit 20 years ago) - Rizhao - Nanjing area - Shanghai. Always good to have different options.

If we stick to our first idea it might be something like: Beijing - Xi'an - Nanjing - one of the places between Nanjing and Shanghai - Shanghai. Probably we add one more place, either Pingyao between Beijing and Xi'an or one of Luoyang/Denfeng/Kaifeng between Xi'an and Nanjing.

What about when picking the area to stay in while in Beijing? You mentioned Sanlitun. Seems to be a fun area to stay in. When I pick an area to stay in I think like this: I really don't mind having to walk or use public transport when getting back and forth during daytime. So the place doesn't have to be "centrally located" when it comes to sights. I like to stay in areas where you easily find a lot of eating places and places to have a drink at at night. Really enjoy eating street food and at night markets. I like bars and cafés with a cool and relaxed atmosphere. Hate discos, night clubs and noisy/crowded bars. ;-)

And what about a good area to stay in while in Shanghai?

A lot of eating places and places to have a drink at night... Hmm... I think the best place would be around Sanlitun area... So many nice restaurants and bars... What's more, it's not too far from the Houhai area which there are also lots of food and drinks... even street food... But are you sure you could do that? i mean most of the time I stay away from them since I'm not quite brave with my stomach... But to be honest if you do a bit search, any area in Beijing would be fine - I could always find nice restaurants around^-^

And in Shanghai? I think the area along the bund would be fine... Another choice would be in Jing'an... Well... just some personal opinion if there's someone who like to fight me over again... Besides, not everyone is the same so it's possible that they would have different opinions...

As for the cities, I think I would suggest Pingyao. It seems you prefer the ancient capital cities - Beijing, Xi'an, Nanjing, Kaifeng, Luoyang and kaifeng... If you are going to take a historical tour, then these would be ok. They are different in some way all as capital cities.. But if you don't only want to stick on that, you might want to chose a bit different one... Then Pingyao is better... me thinks...

Cities with character, but not necessarily packed with sights... those that come to mind and would be geographically suitable would be Kaifeng, Nanjing and Hangzhou. I really loved Kaifeng, I spent a lot of time just walking around and especially enjoyed the street food market. Shanghai also has a lot to offer if you spend more days here and get to know it "below the skin".

Qingdao is quite nice, I especially enjoyed the Tsingtao Brewery (and Museum). I come from a tropical island so the beaches didn't really appeal that much to me. :P But Qingdao is quite renowned for its beaches in mainland China, and it's a pleasant city, so do go if you have time. Haven't been to the other coastal cities in Shandong province, so I can't compare.

In Beijing I would definitely stay in Nanluogu Alley. If you're looking for a budget place, I'd highly recommend Downtown Backpackers.

In Shanghai, try to stay in the French Concession.
