Just now, I found a very funny survey. It is mainly about how Chinese lovers call their partners. According to this survey, most lovers prefer to call their partners Zhutou (猪头, pig head, literally in English). Of course, there are some other pet names for their partners, especially for GF/wives, including 亲爱的(dear), honey, 宝宝(baby), 媳妇儿(wife in English), 妞,丫头 and 领导(LD for short). How do you call your GF/wife? Does she have a special pet name? In the movies, I frequently hear Honey, Sweetheart, Babe etc. Are there any other special ones?

LD is very popular on the internet. When I saw it first time, I thought about a while to figure out what it meant but failed. Then I googled and leant that LD was short for Ling Dao(领导). Usually, those married guys call their wives LD. Why? Their wives have the final say at home. Very often, they control the purse of the family. These men are henpecked. 丫头and 妞 are used by most young people. In most cases, they are not married, just lovers. 媳妇 sounds nice. I just rememered that my cousin just called his wife's name directly. This is acceptable too.

I pretty much always call my girlfriend zhu 猪 or baichi 白痴 because I like both those words haha, she calls me the same a lot. When I'm in Canada I often called my girlfriend baby or baby girl. Just comfortable I guess.

Shanhainese don't use the terms that Cherry list. We call GF 女朋友 and wife 爱人 or 老婆.

I call my wife lǎo pó, 老婆, she calls me lǎo gong, 老公. I myself dislike all those honey-things. In time it becomes just another name without another meaning, although perhaps in the beginning it has had some emotional meaning. Carlos

I don't think Pig Head or Idiot would go down well with a western wife or my Chinese wife. I realise that these are probably pet names and taken in fun but do seem a little disrespectful. I think the most common term in the west would be darling or maybe a private pet name.

So am I to presume being called donkey---- is not a term of endearment?

My friend told me that he called her wife like 亲爱的(Dear) or 宝贝(babe). Those who call their wives like 猪头 must be young people, mainly born in 1980s. Just my guess, hehe .

Baobao? I think that most parents call their little kids Baobao, right? For myself, I will call my future husband 老公 and I prefere him to call me 老婆. It is very simple but works for me.
