Listening, speaking, reading and writing all need great efforts. For communication purpose, listening and speaking goes first. As for character reading and writing, we can leave it for further study.

So basic foundemental is Pinyin. Learn Pinyin then type pinyin. you can download some chinese input output sofeware. search from the internet. Still, it should be hard for people who know little about Chinese characters......
