Chinese netizens are new unwillingly involved in a catfight between 360 anti-virus and Tencent QQ.

In recent weeks, the dispute has flared up:

1. On Sept.27, 360 launched a software, claiming to protect the web user’s privacy. This software was designed for QQ only. On the same day, Tencent made an announcement, saying Tencent never spy the users’ privacy by scanning its users’ hard drive.

2. On Oct. 12, Tencent sent a message to its 100 million online users via pop-up window, saying “Tencent has been slandered by another company who claimed Tencent spies its users’ privacy”. On Oct.13, 360 responded that Tencent had been using QQ software to spy the users’ privacy for long time. On Oct. 14, Tencent sued Qihoo who made 360 anti-virus. Qihoo responded that it would countercharge Tencent.

3. On Oct.29, Qihoo launched another software called “扣扣保镖” to help QQ users avoid the ads in QQ and protect their privacy. Tencent condemned Qihoo on the same day. On Nov. 13, Tencent announced that all computer users who installed 360 anti-virus couldn’t use QQ software unless they unstalled 360 anti-virus.

Then 360 sent a message to its users via pop-up window, pleading the users to stop using QQ. Some web users reported that 360 had already blocked QQ pets and QQ zone.

I am a user of both QQ and 360 anti-virus. I strongly oppose they just use ordinary users’ desktop to fight. Anyway, the users are the victims of their catfight. If they go on fighting each other, they will definitely lose their users. And some other companies will gain benefits, like MS who has its own IM—MSN.

If you were me, what were you going to do?

Choice 1: uninstall 360 and keep using QQ.
Choice 2: uninstall QQ, keep using 360 and then find another IM instead.
Choice 3: uninstall both QQ and 360, change another anti-virus software and IM.

Two cats are fighting each other.

You see two popups that users have been seeing in recent days. The first is from QQ, which reads: "QQ Product Team's official statement: Recently, one company newly-launched privacy protector, claimed QQ as spying on users' private files. We hereby state that Tencent always values privacy protection, and never infringes on users' privacy. We urge users to keep a clear mind to distinguish wrong from right, and not to fall for one company's security scare trap."

The second popup came from 360 Anti-Birus, which states: "360 was Victim of Revenge Enacted by Tencent for How We Protect User Privacy: Since 360's privacy protector exposed QQ's suspicious spying on user privacy, 360 has been the victim of revenge enacted by Tencent in the form of network popups. Latest evidence shows that QQ--with a disguised "super blacklist"--has been scanning users' hard drives as a way to make huge profits.

Tencent's thirst for profit is not limited to this. According to media exposure, Tencent CEO Ma Huateng (马化腾) is worth nearly 30 billion yuan, yet he still claims state housing allowances."

GUESTANTIQQ360 Disgusting! I use both QQ and 360 anti-virus. Now I am deciding to uninstall QQ and 360. They never think of their users.

A dog-eat-dog fight. No one will be the real winner in this fight.

Tencent was definitely wrong. It shouldn’t have forced web users to uninstall 360 anti-virus. I was forced to choose between QQ software and 360 anti-virus too. Finally, I chose to use MSN and I didn’t uninstall 360 anti-virus.

Don’t they (both Tencent and 360 anti-virus) realize that other companies have gained benefits from their dog-eat-dog fight? The number of MSN users has increased by 3 million. Other anti-virus also take some measures to expand their market shares.

Tencent and 360 anti-virus just give other competitors a good chance to develop themselves. Very stupid.

How dare Tencent take such a stupid method to combat 360? Tencent has more than 600 million users. It doesn’t fear to lose its users.

Let them fight! As I said, other competitors can seize this good opportunity to make them strong. I really hope that a new IM can be developed very soon to break Tencent’s monopoly in China.

It is said that the government has interfered in their fight. 360 Anti-virus has made a concession---making 360 anti-virus be compatible with QQ software.

Tencent is a big shark while 360 anti-virus is just a small fish. It is normal that the small fish yields to the big shark.
