Japan was filled with scenes of desperation, as stranded survivors called for help and rescuers searched for people buried in the rubble. Kazushige Itabashi, an official in Natori City, one of the areas hit hardest by the tsunami, said that several districts in an area near Sendai airport were annihilated. Germany is to inspect the safety standards of its nuclear power plants, as an explosion smashed a building housing a nuclear reactor in Japan after a massive earthquake and tsunami, Chancellor Angela Merkel said late Saturday. "The events in Japan is a turning point for the world," Merkel told a press conference in Berlin, accompanied by her Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle. |
