I had lunch at a restaurant in NY called the Shanghai Cafe. We had wonderful soup dumplings and various main courses. I REALLY liked one in particular. The waitress said it was something typically Shanghai. I have tried to find something like it on the internet, but have had no luck. It was a dish using stir-fried chicken thighs and had lots of dried red chillies and some fresh green chillies and no other vegetable. The sauce was salty and lightly sweet. Does someone out there know of anything like this? I would really love to make this at home.

It seems like the Diced Chicken with Chili. But it is Sichuan Cuisine, not Shanghai. I found a recipe here: http://www.travelchinaguide.com/tour/food/chinese-cooking/diced-chicken-chili.htm

Joe, to scrumble everything in one dish with red pepper is not Shanghai cuisine. Here is part of shanghainese home-made dishes that look soothing, clean and taste salty with sweetiness full of refreshing aroma.

I have eaten this several times. It is a bit glutinous but tastes good. People who have stomach trouble can not eat it too much because it is not very well digestible.

Never tried fried lotus roots with ground pork before. Maybe I will try this.

IMHO, sweetened lotus root tastes much better than salted ones.

It seemed to me that this was a Sichuan dish, but the waitress said she was Shanghai Chinese and that this was a typical Shanghai recipe. No matter where is came from, it is delicious.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

Shanghainese take on food very seriously when it comes to hospitality. Here is the home-made cold dish - Jelly fish head this is crunchy and dilicious.
