Now,we can use this idiom to describe Japan:Nations can be changed from one dynasty to the others, but the national character is hard to change(江山易改,本性难移)

Absolutely, California.
A nation is made up of the same group of people ( not necessarily same race ). Education and circumstances may make people aware of how their actions/behaviour should be. But beneath this surface, the true self will reveal itself from time to time.
Refusing to apologise for atrocities committed simply means that they think there was nothing wrong with their earlier actions - ie the Chinese deserved their fate in the hands of the Japanese. Just hope that similar fate won't befall them in future. Perhaps they think that they were doing a good deed for their Heavenly Emperor - just like the way their suicide pilots were brought up into believing ( this reminds me of the suicidal bombers that hit USA on Sept 11 ).
In the long term, it is culture that determines a person/nation's characteristics. I think this is still lacking in Japan despite the amount of effort displayed outwardly through their bowing, etc, etc.

To Mayoo1:

please read carefully: the UN-backed Gulfwar was `91 WITHOUT military support of Japan. But because it was an UN decision they had to participate - by paying money.....not sending soldiers.

Now, you are talking about the last US attack on Iraq, where afterwards Japan did send so called peace troops - which were not involved in any battle (still you can argue it is a kind of support for the "Bush-war")

To Pinetree:

Now you want to talk about Taiwan? You could open up a new post, would be an interesting topic.
Just as a notice: Who got this new law which automatically starts a war with Taiwan??? It is not Japan;-)

OK. Lets start with street food.

Shihlin night market in Taipei has the most delicious chinese street food in this planet. Beijing's Wangfujing is no fight. Why?

This could be due to the innovative minds of the street hawkers in Shihlin. They invent new ways of preparation and using new ingredients.

However, that cannot be said of the Wangfujing street hawkers. They are still very traditional in their thinking. So it will be very difficult to match up with the popularity of Shihlin.

Well, all is not lost yet. Wangfujing got to strive harder to compete. Agree?

ok, lets avoid a changing of the subject about Taiwan, USA, or whatever.

The resumee of the latest posts is the following:

Japanese are "animals", "militant" and nations and characters never change, they keep the same since 60 years......and of course they "look down on China and try to slow down the progress in China"........any diplomatic talking is "not useful".....

Reading those lines I wonder where the "progress" is - certainly not in common sense;-)

Dunno what lacking of progress in commonsense Elcarbon is referring to on the discussion in this post. I thot this post was started for discussion ? It is very well participated and each of us participates in our own styles.
Now someone is saying that the discussion lacks progress in commonsense. If there is commonsense, then this post shouldn't have been started at all - knowing that it is going to be sensitive & highly emotional !!
Hahaha !! Now we read about S.Korean President Roh lashing out at Koizumi at the APEC for his continued visits to the war shrines.
There are implications/meanings in a person's/ nation's actions. Let's not act innocent & naive pl.

All of us enjoy a little bantering. All in good spirit. Nobody should feel offended. Take it that the postings are someone's opinion which you may or may not agree. I have seen much nonsense on my postings. I care less. It is their prerogative. Similarly, my reply to the postings of others are also my right of opinion. They can take it or leave. So, all said and done...lets help each other in genuine situations and continue to enjoy the general forum as it is.
