My wife and I are traveling to China for 2 weeks in April. It's our first time in China and we're after some advice to fill in the mid section of our trip.

Initially we will be in Beijing for 4 days and plan to move down country after this, ending up in Hong Kong for 3 days where we are meeting up with friends.

Our dilemma is whether we take a sleeper train down to Xi'an for a couple of days and then fly on to Guilin, or sack it off and fly straight down to Guilin and spend more time checking out the countryside around Guilin/Yangshou perhaps taking a boat trip down the Li river before getting a bus to Shenzen and HK

As we' re starting and finishing (and live) in big cities, we're quite keen to see some rustic countryside in between for some chill out time, so are we heading in the right direction?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Xian has a long history. It has many historical sites. If you are interested in Xian, you can go there for a visit. Forget to say, Terra Cotta Warriors is worth a visit.

Xian is a good choice, especially when one first come to China. It's the fast way to know the history and culture of China.

You should have a visit for Xi‘an first. It is worthy seeing, you can taste & smell the long history of the culture of old china, will be sure an unforgotable experience.

Xian is a lot like Beijing with historical sites to see.
If you're looking for the rustic/rural experience then spend your time around Guilin.

Alternatively you could fly into Guiyang and travel overland to Guilin. It's a great ride. Take a look at a map, read some of the reviews here and if you've got the energy you won;t be disappointed and you'll cover a lot of countryside. Rongjiang and Sanjiang are both good places to break you trip without detouring too far off the main road but you will see something.

Or just get to Yangshuo, stay somewhere like the Outside Inn and just ride bikes and do day or overnight trips from there.

all the best

Hope your China trip went well!

Found this on a search and I must say, Jabarootoo, that route sounds interesting. Have a couple weeks for Guizhou and possibly Yunnan from June 23

Was aiming for around Kaili via Guiyang from Beijing. Guiyang flights are getting few...

Any other tips for this route, please? A guide to use or a trusted agency? Just read the 'dumped in remote China' post and am getting more wary about CC payments upfront.

cheers,
Pat
