Recently, a monkey named “Wukong” (name of the leading role in "Journey to the West",) has been gaining great popularity in China. His keeper bought him in Japan. Wukong became famous because someone took cute pictures of him in KFC when he was slurping a soft drink. However, he raises hot online discussion that is it legal to keep monkeys as pets. As for China, all primates are protected animal, so it is illegal to keep one if the keeper does not get approved by relevant department.

It looks cute but will become very dangerous when he grows up. Don't forget that it carries viruses that are bad for your health.

The most dangerous things he will do are imitation. How could his keeper handle him if he learns to turn the gas on, or use knifes. I check this news, it is said that the weight of this monkey can be 2kg at most when grow up.

Monkeys sometimes are kept as pets, while apes are used to pluck coconuts. Yes, Sunnudream, these primates are trained and not really tamed. When they grow older they tend to get wild and dangerous. Wan

So Wanhu, it is legal to keep monkeys as pet in Malaysia? you said that apes are used to pluck coconuts, how about now? are people not allowed to do this to them any more?

Dear Raindrop, plucking coconuts by apes is a dying profession, but still exists in villages, because you won't see coconut trees in town areas, they are now concrete jungle. There are some primates that are classified under endangered species, such as Orang Utan, so people are prohibited to take them as pets. We still have a lot of wild monkeys, as in Penang Botanical garden. Ladies need to watch their handbags and purses. Wan

Ladies need to watch their handbags and purses. When my friend visited Emei Mountain, she was hurt by the monkeys. But she was partially responsible for it. She disobeyed the rule and threw food to the monkeys. Then a group of monkeys ran into her and asked for more. She was frightened by them. As a result, the monkeys rewarded her by leaving some scars on her arms. This is a lesson. Never feed monkeys in the tourist areas. And also take care of your belongings. Some monkeys steal your camera, bags or purse.

Lonely, even if the visitors don't feed the monkeys, they still come to find food in the garbage bins. These wild monkeys are dangerous. The wildlife enforcement officers do come from time to time but not enough place to keep them. Wan

Yes, monkeys are dangerous in many tourist sites. Some even mess about with girls skirts. Those in feedlots are becoming lazy and too fat to jump.

Yes like the orang Utan sanctuary in Sepilok, Sabah. They tend to be dependent, they can't find food on their own. Wan

So, it is right that visitors should not feed the monkeys. As well as the keeper, they may try to plant fruit trees on their hill. and give them back to the wildlife ecology.
