Hi ,

I planned to travel HK on July. Its a 6 days plan out of 3 days I will be occupied with my business purpose. Remaining 3 days I am planning to roam around. I heard that Shenzhen is one of the best place to spend time.

I think instead of hiring a Taxi, can i take a rental car for 3 days. So i can drive my own and go the places where i want ?

If so what is the procedure? Should I submit something?

Jeff,

I am sorry to tell you that foreigners are not allowed to drive in China if they do not have Chinese driver license. But you may apply for the temporary driver license. It takes about 2-3 days and you have to submit some documents.

1. valid entry and exit document
2. driver license. Of course you have to translate it into Chinese.
3. a document that proves you meet all the requirements to drive in China (age and body conditions)
4. 2 bareheaded and full-faced color photos in 3.3 cm length.

Sunnydream, in 2006 I rode a motorscooter in Xinhui and was stopped by a policeman. The bike belonged to one friend who worked at the JT Public Library as a librarian. The LC Classification Scheme was in Chinese, haha.

Anyway, I showed my driving license, and how fortunate the policeman didn't know English at all, and couldn't understand what I was talking about. He let me go. later then I knew that I can't drive in China with my driving license, like I used to drive in other foreign countries.

Jeff, you have the option but more expensive than taking a taxi. Rent a car with a driver like I used to do in Guangzhou.

Sunnydream, I have thought of that too, looking at the cost of renting a self-driven car is not cheap, too many rules and requirements. In 2010 October, I tried to rent a car in Beijing using my credit card but the operator wanted a card issued by Chinese bank(s). On top of that, I needed to deposit RMB10k as collateral which will be reimbursed back to me once I returned the car. I'd prefer public transport then.

Hi Sunny Dream,

Thank You For Your Valuable Information.

My purpose of taking a car its for just 3 to 4 days. If it takes 2 to 3 days to get a temporary license, I don't think its good to take a rental car. I think I can hire a taxi.

Hi Wan,

Thank You for your valuable information. The idea of taking a rental car was i thought i can take my own time wherever I go rather than asking a taxi driver to wait or we should hurry up.

I think its better i will hire a taxi.

You are welcome, Jeff.

It's better to hire a taxi than rent a car and a driver if you do not go to somewhere far away.

In Shenzhen, you can use Metro train, a lot faster and cheaper too.

Hi SunnyDream and Wan,

My intention was to drive in a new place. But as its an headache especially when i do not have enough time for all the formalities to get it done.

I will prefer a taxi.
