guest82111 Hi , we are an english/thai couple travelling to China for 4 weeks at the end of September, and would love some help from experienced travellers and locals!!

We love travelling, seeing great scenery, meeting the locals, eating street food rather than fancy restaurants and are quite happy in budget hotels as we prefer to spend our time seeing a country not its TV stations!!
We have flights booked from 25th September to 23rd October in and out of Beijing, between tose dates, now theres a question.
We have a rough rout e mapped out and were hoping if maybe anyone could advise on the pros and cons?

We are thinking of starting with a few days in Beijing and then:
Train to Datong
Datong to Taiyuan (by train?) with a quick visit to Pingyao maybe??
Taiyuan by train to Xian
From Xian fly to Nanning
Nanning to Guilin by bus
Guilin to Hong Kong (is flying possible??)
HK-Macau-HKfor a day
HK fly back to Beijing

Is there any advice anyone can give on how long in each town/area, maybe special things to see , slightly "off the map",but not too far as we dont speak chinese!

GUEST7904 Your itinerary is great. But make sure that you have proper visa when you fly to HK and then get back to Beijing. If you have visa problem, ask help from CTS (China Travel Service) in HK. They are very capable of getting your visa very fast.

If I may add, it would be more convenient that you fly from HK back to Thailand instead of Beijing, unless you have something to do over there. I'm not promoting but it's cheaper to fly AirAsia from HKIA to Suvarnabhumi.

GUEST65177 YOU have almost one month to travel. I suggest you could travel by train. I noticed that the most of your destinations are historic cities. I have never been there before, so I can't give you some suggestions. By the way, I like Thailand very much. And I'm in Shenzhen, Shenzhen and HK are two adjacent cities. Welcome to China.
