Last night, CCTV reported an exhibition of Italian Renaissance works at the National Museum of China in Beijing. The TV pictures showed that there was something wrong with the Statue of David. Clearly, you could see that David’s private area was blurred. CCTV might be worried that it was impolite and uncivilized to expose David’s private area in public while Chinese audience didn’t think so. A netizen commented that the Statue of David is one of Michelangelo’s greatest works and there is no need to blur his private area.

What do you think?

Jimmyb,

David was covered when it was shown on TV live. When it appeared on TV for the second time, its cover was removed. CCTV changed its mind so quickly.

Well, some Hong Kong entertainment stars joined a TV program of Hunan TV. They were asked to draw a picture of Venus de Milo. Leo KU drew it quickly and intentionally 'covered' her breasts. He explained that he heard naked or half-naked things were forbidded to appear on mainland TV Stations.

Self-censorship. Some view that it's OK to be naked in the name of art.

The sculpture itselft has no fault. Some people might have filthy ideas when they see the naked.

It isn't a big deal when the sculpture is naked. But it is a big deal when someone tries to cover the private area of the sculpture.
