22 passengers are today rewarded to take Hainan Airline for free for their whole life time. They helped the crew foil a hijack on a flight in Xinjiang on June 29th by 6 "East Turkistan" terrorists who some western countries are vague with. We highly appreciate what Hainan Airline has done to these brave passengers. If failed, the consequences may be even worse. Fortunately, they succeeded, compared with tragic 9.11. What’s your idea? If you were on that flight, would you stand up fighting against the hijackers or sit there quietly waiting for help?

The hijackers were heavily armed?

Wan,

They were not heavily armed according to the news report. They just dismantled their walking sticks and then used the iron sticks to fight the people and open the cockpit. Also, they brought lighter, match sticks and primer detonator.

How could they took these things to board the plane?

Probably just a budding snatch thieves who wanted to elevate their profession, not real hijackers. Should they be real ones, those passengers wouldn't have the chance to survive as they could have detonated the plane.

Dear Laugh, sometimes airport authority doesn't screen well on things passengers bring with them. I used to bring along my walking stick when I hurt my right leg, the security just let me walked through the security gate rather than scanning it through the machine. With metal walking stick, I could have brought contraband goods, undetected by the security gate.

Wan,

The authorities claimed that the security men at the airport made no mistakes. They didn't find any explosive when the terrorists passed the security gate. But how did they bring that explosive to the plane? The authorities said they were working on it. They seemed to know how they did it but didn't want to tell the public. Maybe, they are worried that some other people might use the same way to bring some dangerous things to the plane.

Why didn't they examine the walking stick? Maybe, there is no rule that requires them to do it.

For security reasons, they need to screen or scan everything, that may cause danger to either aircraft or passengers, Laugh.

Then why they forgot to scan the walking stick? The guy who pretended to be a disabled man can be nominated for Oscar because no one found out he was a normal man until they tried to hijack the plane.

How many security men do they have on a plane? Just one? I just heard that they pretended to be a normal passenger.

The presence of airline security guard or sky marshal depends on the need, not all flights need sky marshal(s). Even in the US, sky marshals are used selectively on certain airlines.

Wan,

According to what I found, Chinese professional full-time sky marshals serve some special airlines. But normal airlines also have pluralistic security men. Usually, there is just one marshal on the plane.

In my views, all airlines must have sky marshals to ensure all passengers' safety.

Between should and would, Laugh. Providing sky marshal costs money and some airlines just couldn't be bothered to employ especially the low cost carriers. I have heard (but need to be verified) that some of them (operators) instead of flight engineers, they only provide flight technicians instead.

Then the airlines give the terrorists a chance to hijack the cheap flights and launch attacks.
