Fourteen Chinese patrol ships entered waters near the Diaoyu Islands on Tuesday to reinforce the country’s sovereignty over the area. The fourteen patrol ships include ten Marine surveillance ships and four fishery administration ships. Their mission is to protect Chinese fishing operations as hundreds of fishing boats head toward the Diaoyu Islands for the first time since a moratorium was lifted.

Fleets from the eastern provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian, have resumed fishing operations in waters off the Diaoyu Islands.

Many vessels are eagerly waiting to exploit the area’s rich fishing resources.

Cai Yongkang, captain of Minshiyu 07202, says, "We usually fish in waters off Northern Taiwan, near the Diaoyu Islands. It’s a rich fishing ground. There are many fish like blue mackerel scad and mackerel."

Authorities say more Chinese fishing boats have come to waters around the Diaoyu Islands this year. As of September 18th, more than 20 fishing boats from Zhejiang were operating within 60 nautical miles around Diaoyu Island.

Lin Chong, security director of Zhejiang fishing ships security and information center, says, "Fishing boats from Zhejiang Province mainly gather in the northern sea area of the Diaoyu Islands. One is at a western part of the islands. Data shows that there are 22 ships in the waters 111 kilometers off the Diaoyu Islands."

The State Oceanic Administration said that China would enhance patrols in waters around the Diaoyu Islands in order to protect the safety of Chinese fishing boats.

Meanwhile, Japan’s Maritime Security Department has sent patrol ships and planes to closely follow Chinese patrol ships, but no action has been taken yet. China’s fishery administration ships have pledged to protect the fishermen.

According to Captain Cai, his family has been fishing around the Diaoyu Islands for generations, with his forefathers telling him to use heavy nets here because of the rough waters.

A former ship captain from an East China fishing company found documents recording China’s fishing operations from the 1970s to 1990s, which showed more evidence of China’s traditional usage and claim to the area.

Zhao Yaozhong, former captain of Jiangshu Fishery company, says, "The documents logged the position of each fishing boat and the output of their nets. In my opinion, The Diaoyu Islands are our inherent territory just like other islands near the mainland. To us, it can be compared to the backyard of a crop farmer. Vessels from Hong Kong and other places in the South China Sea also head out there."

China maintains that the Diaoyu Islands are an indisputable part of its territory. It hopes the issue can be resolved peacefully but reserves the right to take further action.
