Chinese students have to survive the college entrance examinations if they wish to enter the colleges or universities. They have to pass four exams (math, Chinese, English and comprehensive liberal arts exam/comprehensive science exam) in two days. The total scores earned from the four exams will decide what kind of university you will enter.

Many Chinese students complain that the college entrance exams are too difficult and that the weights for the four exams are unreasonable. Take English exam for example, many students do very well in the exams but they can’t speak fluent English. The math problems in the exam are too difficult for the students to solve. Some people even call for canceling the math exam. Why? It’s useless. They learn how to solve complicated math problem in middle school but they find that they never apply the mathematic theories or models in daily life except for counting the money.

Is the math exam really difficult? The 6th Beijing Sustainable Education International Forum was held in Beijing not long ago. An British educationist exclaimed when he saw the math paper for the college entrance exams. “The Pythagorean theorem problem appears in the math exam for the freshman in the universities of the UK. But Chinese students in middle school have to make out so many auxiliary lines to solve the geometric problem appearing in the college entrance math exam.”, said he.

I don’t know if the British educationist told the truth. Chinese students can earn gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad. However, no great world-class mathematician has appeared in China in recent years.

Do you know who set the exam papers? It’s done by a special team including university teachers, teaching researchers and excellent middle school teachers. No wonder the exams are very difficult. The college students solve the problems made out by those professionals.

It is not uncommon to see an English native fails in his English examination. In search of excellence examination is tailored as such to determine only best students are accepted. When I was in standard six in the primary school, three best students from each school were selected to sit for the boarding school examination. Around 400 students were selected from the whole country to enter these boarding schools. Was the examination tough? Definitely but not impossible to pass in flying colours.

For university entrance, for certain subjects such as English, one needs to pass the English exam and interview and admits to one year preparatory course which will be sponsored fully by the Ministry of Higher Education. If one gets less than 3.5 CGPA (2 semesters) one will not get the offer to continue in the first year university.

Cherry,

After surviving the college entrance examinations, they will enter the paradise. In colleges, the students have compulsory courses and selected courses. Everyone has to learn the compulsory courses and then chooses selected courses on their own. The teachers don't take care of you as your nannies in high school. They don't care whether you attend the classes or not.

The final exams held at the end of each semester just take up for 60 percent of the total scores. Your attendance rate and small quizes scores take up for another 40 percent. It sounds much more reasonable, right?

Why did I say college is a paradise? Most freshmen are set free from frequent exams and courses in high school. They have much more free time. Unfortunately, many can't arrange their time properly. They don't spend their time reading books or studying. Instead, they play e-games, find girlfriends or boyfriends and do other meaningless activities.
