GUEST73199 if you speak/learnt mandarin already it is NOT easy to learn cantonese. you will never be able to get your tongue around the tones.

i you already know cantonese it is easy to learn mandarin.
cantonese isn't easy to learn just because its a dialect. you try to master 9-10 different tones.

GUESTHAPPY I'd have to say.... Cantonese. It's fun, easy (if you ignore the negative comments about cantonese), and a colourful language! Best language to tell stories, poems, and jokes with! It's a great language. The tones are a piece of cake, trust me. Cantonese is the funnest!

I had to speak English when I visited Hongkong in 2000, because almost no people understood Mandarin in Hongkongstreet that time, But I can speak mandarin now in Hongkong, a lot of Hongkong people speak Mandarin.
This is the powerful reason you should learn Mandarin.
Mandarin is used all of China.

GUEST87377 The sound from people who speak cantonese is so annoying!!! People should not need to learn cantonese since the majority of Chinese speak mandarin. It's a waste of time and energy to learn cantonese!!!

I think Cantonese is nice. It is my local language. hehe, However, I prefer to speak mandarin at first.

i have two bosses. One can speak mandarin and English. One is a Guangzhou native. I need to speak both languages when talking to them. Too many languages will make you feel confused. Sometimes I speak several languages in one sentence, which is not good and so strange. There are so many local languages in China. Only Mandarin can let you go through China without snags since Chinese people almost can understand mandarin. As for foreigners, if they want to know more about china, or do business in China, it is no doubt they should learn mandarin but not Cantonese. Of course, it is also good to learn Cantonese at the same time upon interest.
