 | Statistics show that the population of men is far from in proportion to women in China. The figure is 119.89: 100 A famous schoolar in old times said, it was normal for every stockpot having several spoons. See, what happened? they may even have none. Guess what will happen in 20 years... |

| Great choice for women;-) But actually this is a problem. We had this topic before and I dont want to scare people. But women-kid-napping and trade, rape and prostitution rises because of that. The Chinese ministery for public security opened a hotline for kidnapping cases....and I read some statistics I can hardly believe (too scary to be mentiones here) But dont get nervous, I still think that China is a very secure country for travelling. I met many single female traveller who had the same impression. Actually it can be more dangerous to take the wrong exit from a highway in a major US city;-) |

| I've been to 15 countries whilst i've been travelling and would agree that the US was the most dangerous by far because of the gun culture. Although i wouldn't say China was entirely safe. I was robbed, verbally threatened, punched and pickpocketed during my 2 months in China. |

| Robbed? Punched? Verbally Threatened? Ge, where did that happened??? Can you tell me some more details? I lose my faith. I mean, Ive seen some fights, even when a girl got beaten up by her boyfriend. He crashed a complete teapot on her head but nobody around them really cared for the situation. But still, for my person I always felt secure. Or was it the police while you were smoking the wrong tobacco;-) |

| This is not even close to all the problems i had whilst travelling in China, but thats part of backpacking, you take the good with the bad, the hard with the easy... Pickpocketed @ Nanjing - I followed someone to a cheap hotel from the train station with my bags, then i felt a pulling on my pocket, i looked round to see someone trying to take my wallet, he had undone my pocket zip and got the wallet half way out. Chinese people outside a restaurant watched and laughed. Robbed @ Shanghai - i was sat on the bund late at night eating food when somebody sat next to me. At the time i didn't think anything of it, then later i realised he'd stolen my Lonely Planet China (270bht) after he'd gone. Scammed @ Shanghai - I met 2 "students" who invited me for a cup of tea, wanting to make chinese friends i followed, only to find it cost about 500 yuan for 5 tiny cups of tea =( Lesson learned - check the prices first! Punched @ Xi'an - Some guy tried to pickpocket me, again, when i looked round he still had his hand in my pockey. I took his hand out pretty forcefully and so the little guy decided he wanted to fight me. He ended up on the floor, and i walked away. Verbally abused @ Great wall - After asking some guy in a minivan if he goes to Simatai, he said sure, then half way he stopped and told me to get a taxi. After i refused to pay, this little guy felt the need to speak chinese at me furiously then grabbed me for a fight. The problem was sloved without a fight. I'm not trying to put anybody off going to China, they were all small petty incidents, usually because i was staying in the cheapest areas. Just beware at all times =) |

| Hi,Gaz07,I think all the conceivable things has been happend to you!I have the same experience in Zheng zhou,but I took a mongolian falchion with me!He ran so fast immediately! I hope you have not so bad impress of China! |

| ah, ok. Thats more or less common but some of your problems are housemade: e.g. in Shanghai, especially Nanjing Lu there were often women coming at me talking about making friends and drinking a coffee. Now I heard for the second time that they are for 500 Yuan and something rip off. I always thought they are prostitutes! I always told them with a smile I have a grilfriend and that even if I have none I would not need that stuff they would be offering. I told them look at me, do you really think I need that? And why should someone say "lets make friends" - this happens, you dont have to talk about making friends......So people who talk about it have always something else on their mind. So always avoid these special people!!! If you think they really just want to be helpful or even friends tell them you can get a coffee at starbucks - avoid their special places..... Robbed: I thought of knives and guns, thats just stealing - can happen at my home, too;-) picketpocketing: ok, can happen, of course. I guess I was always lucky - but on the other hand, I did not give them many chances. My wallet is in my front pocket while travelling, in really crowded places I keep my hand on it. I only travel with my former army backpack, which is quite samll and better to control as for backpackers which travel with those huge backpacks and 5 other bags attached to it. I always wonder why people want to bring their complete home with furniture with them while travelling? But your misunderstanding for transportation is really unavoidable. Stuff like this happens easily. If I go on a private bus for longer distances I only pay at the end to see what Chinese pay, because they always try to rip of laowais. This is of course no protection against their idea of stopping in the middle of nowhere and telling this is it, get off..... And shouting? If you cant understand it, why should you care? Think of it as a love song, makes you smile;-) A guy once told me of his motto: ignorance is bliss;-)))) |

| Oh, and I love Chinese humour. There could be the worst accident and people would still be laughing;-) |
