I have been to the following sections of the great wall:
- eastern simatai and the trek from simatai to jinshanling
- jinshanling to gubeikou
- badaling
- shanhaiguan
- western jiankou
- jiankou to mutianyu

I would recommend the 10km trek from simatai to jinshanling. I was there during Jan this year. It was a relaxing 4 hrs walk/climb with great scenery! There arent many tourists around, in fact, I did not see another soul during the first 3 hours! Here's a pic http://lamigos.com/jinshanling.jpg

My humble opinion:
- eastern simatai and the trek from simatai to jinshanling (not too tiring and the view is fantastic)
- jinshanling to gubeikou (you have to spend like 30% of the route outside the wall because a section was zoned off for military reasons)
- badaling (crowded, rides available for those who do not wish to climb)
- shanhaiguan (avoid, touristy)
- western jiankou (slightly dangerous but great views)
- jiankou to mutianyu (great views but not recommended as i find the part with the semi hanging ladder too dangerous)
- mutianyu (badaling with less tourists)

I would recommend the 10km trek from simatai to jinshanling. I was there in Jan this year. It was a relaxing 4 hrs walk/climb with great scenery! There arent many tourists around, in fact, I did encounter another person during the first 3 hours!
