Hi, I will be visiting Beijing in September.. I decided not to go on a guided tour, b/c it seems that tourists get scammed often when they go on a guided tour. I will be lodging at a hotel nearby the forbbiden city, so that i won't have to travel to go visit the site. But to go to the badaling great wall, which bus should I take?? Is it safe to go onto those tourist bus? i'll also be visiting the temple of heaven and the summer palace, which bus shall I take? Thanks!!

I advise you to walk to Temple of Heaven from the forbidden city (1hr). If i'm not wrong, you will pass the old market and see what beijing was like in the past also. I'm not sure how to get to Badeling by yourself though, mostly people go on those tour things. I strongly recommend the Summer Palace, it was the best thing in Beijing City in my opinion. I thought it was 10 times better than Temple of Heaven, which is/was now under construction.

To Gaz07,I agree with you very very very strongly!Yes,the Summer Palace is better than the other parks,I go to there every year!!! Yes,3 days is so limited!!!and you just gain a superficial understanding through cursory observation! I spent one day in the forbidden city, one day in the summer palace, one day on the great wall,a half day in the Heaven Temple! Btw,Si Ma Tai Great Wall is wonderful!

The only way to go to the badaling great wall is by taking a tour bus? but then again, i've heard of bad things about taking the tour bus, then the guide will bring you to some other places, and force you to pay the entrance fee, then pay for some other non-great-wall related activities!! i also heard that it's easy to go to the great wall but it's hard to come back to downtown... is this true??

I took one tour bus in China and, yes, they took me to a whole bunch of meaningless temples but i wasn't forced to pay the fee. I sat outside in nearby cafe's instead which can be pretty boring. I went to Simatai Great Wall with private transport. It was a big hassle and i had problems but i still got there 2 hours before the tour bus!! Good luck!

I advise you to go to Badaling Greatwall by train,it is best way for the tourist who don't like go on guided tour, you can take train No.7173 from Beijing North railway satation(xizhimen)in downtown, departure time is 7:36AM everyday, arriving station is Qinglongqiao,10:51AM. the ticket just 1 Euro. Out of Qinglongqiao Station, You will see Badaling Greatwall, I think maybe just take 20 minutes walking time, then you will enjoy the wonderful scenery. Return to Beijing ,Train No.7174 Qinglongqiao Station Departure 15:44 Beijing North railway satation Arrive 17:57 Almost 4 hours stay alone at Greatwall!
