Photographic tips
By DAVEC | 4/14/2007 3:12:57 PM

As a photographer myself there are some essential items to take that occassionally get overlooked. First to pack has to be silica sachets, air conditioning and in and out of rooms will produce condensation and they help big time. Small screwdrivers, just a tiny cheap set for the 'what if' situation. Spares of everything, batteries, film or memory cards because there is every chance you will need them. On the subject of memory cards take more than 1 and change it in the canera regularly, so if you ever lose or damage 1 then you still get a good selection of images. Dont forget to format your memory cards too ( but then you knew that anyway). Consider a well padded and weatherproof case for your gear it is a good investment. Personnaly I use lowepro and swear by it, great protection AND a lifetime guarantee.
Enjoy your trip to China and if you see a big guy carrying a huge backpack full of too much photo gear looking worn out that will be me, smile and say hi!!

Local goods for Yangshuo
By HAMSON | 4/4/2007 5:16:13 AM

There are also a few things not usually available elsewhere:

Postcards and picture books of the area, in stores or hawked by older women on the street
Chinese paintings of the local Karst scenery
T-shirts with Chinese characters with different slogans, such as "I have no money" or "Foreigner coming, Foreigner going"
Hard Rock Cafe T-shirts are common, but there is no Hard Rock in Yangshuo
Some places with great names — Red Capitalism Cafe, Outside Inn, Fawlty Towers — do not have T-shirts, unfortunately
Silver and embroidery pieces by local minorities.
Prices for large pieces are high, but some pieces may be worth them.
Small pieces, such as embroided Zhuang minority love balls, are also available
You should also bargain on these, of course.

Other interesting things
On Die Cui Lu about half a block from the river is Nature House selling various rocks. Some are interesting geological specimens; others are carved and/or painted. Fascinating.

Taxi
By JOSE | 4/1/2007 9:28:51 PM

Apr. 2006, Guangzhou. The taxi drivers the ones with official taxi logos are ok. However, take care with those drivers with cars offered in the hotel or fairs. They are very unprofessional and can drive you crazy with their behavior (smoke crazily, sets teh radio at high volume ).

Western foods in Guanzhou
By JOSE | 4/1/2007 9:24:53 PM

Apr. 2006. In general, it is easy to find western food in Guangzhou, since it is a very international city.

I found a Brazilian rodizio, but as a surprise they charged in the bill everything used in the table, like napkins!, and toothpick!

In the Guangzhou fair I saw the most crowded McDonald. May be 100 customers per counter, and some 100 counters at the time!!!
