By JANEVERDOORN | 6/3/2004 8:11:24 PM
Hey, Apart from spending money I guess, Where can you go wrong? Of course that is if and when you have not reserved enough time to spend in the country. Then again is there ever enough time in this enormous place? We will always feel we have to come back.

try a bicycle
By JANVAN | 5/13/2004 4:11:51 AM
Whenever possible try to rent a bicycle. Within cities it's often the best way to see a lot and to cover the sometimes quite impressive distances. We went to the summerpalace from beijing downtown in about an hour and a half and have seen many different faces of the city.

The Hutongs
By DENNIS | 4/28/2004 4:16:39 PM
While in Beijing, I joined this tour group that included a visit to the Hutong Alleys...once I paid my 60yuan ticket, the tour guide left me with another guide...unfortunately it was said in Chinese and since it was such a big group and me being the only foreigner(also looking like a chinese)who am I to complain! The sites were not as fascinating and the place was simply a drag! For 60 yuan, you might as well buy dozens of cut-paper art!

Certificate of the climb!
By DENNIS | 4/28/2004 4:09:56 PM
Hey guys,
Going to the Great Wall is definitely a must! I was so enthralled that when I got to one of the posts selling certificates that you did indeed climb the Wall, I hastily bought one. I got one without my picture in it for 30yuan!...as I walked further there were other stalls with the same service but with much lower price and with your photo in it! So for you guys out there...haggle a little!

Dining in Beijing
By CYNTHIAA | 4/26/2004 4:22:01 PM
All the expensive hotels have several well-appointed restaurants, where the atmosphere is sedate but prices are sometimes not as high as you might expect; look out for their special offers, advertised in the city's listings magazines. Local restaurants, though, are cheaper and livelier. Expect to eat earlier than you would in Western cities: lunch is around noon and dinner around 6pm or 7. Few places stay open after 11pm. Restaurants usually have two, sometimes more dining rooms , which are priced differently - though the food comes from the same kitchen. The cheapest one is usually the open-plan area on the first floor. It's rarely worth phoning ahead to book a table; if you do, you will always end up in the most expensive sections.

ATMs in China
By TASSALUM | 4/26/2004 3:25:28 PM
There are branches of The Bank of China all over the place so you shouldn't have any trouble. If you're going to smaller, more remote places it may be better to take cash though.

China's largest scale railwya speed increase
www.chinaview.cn 2004-04-18 21:04:07
BEIJING, April 18 (Xinhuanet) -- China launched its largest scale railway speed increase Sunday, adding over 3,500 kilometers of newlines into its express railway network and raising the speeds of its major lines to 160 kilometers per hour.
After this speed increase, China will be running trains on a total of 7,700 kilometers of railway at speeds exceeding 160 kilometers per hour, which will shorten the travel time between some major cities like Beijing and Shanghai.
The speed of freight trains was also raised, which is the firsttime for China to raise the speeds of passenger trains and freighttrains together. The railway's cargo transport capacity will increase 3 percent, said the Ministry of Railways.
