Don't Buy Electronics
By EEUREKA | 1/5/2007 10:56:53 PM

While I was in Beijing I went to the Silk Market a few times to go shopping. A couple people I was with found "a great deal" on ipods. It said they were 4g. They looked great, and the people that were selling them even turned them on and let us try them out. Well 2 of my friends ended up buying one. When we took them back to our hostle and charged them up we found that they were a complete scam. They only held about 1 CD worth of music and also had problems charging and keeping their battery life. Steer clear of these, especially in the rip-off markets. They most definately will be rip-off.

Great Wall at Simitai
By GERALDINE | 7/27/2006 10:05:50 PM

I am sure that all parts of the Great Wall have their own special features and attributes that make them worth visiting but our trip to Simitai was a wonder in the making. Apart from the bus ride that saw more than 30 people jammed on to our 18 seater bus and the hairy overtaking of the driver, which was an experience in itself, the Wall at Simitai was indeed a stunning sight. It certainly tests your fitness as some parts are extremely steep . This part of the wall is in a more original condition than the likes of Badaling and that in itself is worth seeing. Parts of the wall have crumbled away and there remains only the walkway winding up the very steep terrain of this area. You can see the towers disappearing off in to the distance. There is a real sense of achievement to have walked on this part of the wall and you should not be put off by the long bus ride from Beijing!! From here you can see for absolutely miles and the peace and quiet of the place- due to few tourists and even fewer birds in the area- are hard to match with the bustle that is often seen on other parts of the wall. You can truly make this a leisurely visit to the Great Wall of China. Make sure you take plenty of water as it is a strenuous climb and they charge a fortune for water on the wall! If you have expended all your strength by the time you walk up you can take a serene ride down on the cable car to be confronted by the stalls at the base- a must have I survived the Wall T Shirt can always be bought here!

I am shopping in SilkStreet, can you believe it?
By MELODYNYELLOW | 7/24/2006 1:15:12 PM

I went shopping in SilkStreet with my friend Pauline today. I remember I wrote a tip last last week about Never Ever shopping in SilkStreet. Yes I did.

I remembered, but I did go there. SilkeStreet has a lot of things that you can not find in other places in Beijing. Like fake Famous brand jeans, Cheap clothes, Convenient exchangeable treads, really "luxury necklace and earrings" and so on. My friend was looking for a pair of jeans, a pair of Victoria Beckham jeans. And she found them there!! Of course they're not real but they're really cheap!!

Ok, here comes the tip of shopping in SilkStreet: The sale girl asked for 390RMB for that pair of jeans. Everybody knows they are fake but nobody should say it out. Why? I don't know. But whatever don't say it out, coz' nobody wanna make nobody angry. And then you gotta bargin. "Bargin", You really should remember this word in China. It works at almost every place here and helps you a lot. I drove a really hard bargin for my friend today. Remember to bargin harder and try to find some bad things about the things you are going to buy. remember do not behave like you really like it although you really like it.Just behave like it is not the type of thing that you are looking for and it is very bad, something like that.Remember how much did the sale girl asked us for the jeans? Yes, 390RMB. And how much do you think I gave her finally? haha, 70RMB. It's a lot cheaper!! They didn't cost me a lot right? They are fake brand, but they are worth to buy.

Beijing Subway
By MELODYNYELLOW | 7/15/2006 7:02:40 AM

The easiest way to move in Beijing is subway. There are 3 subway lines in beijing (and other 3 lines are on construction, they will be able to be used by 2008). You can get almost anywhere you "must see" by taking the subway. The price for each ticket is 3 RMB and you can only use it once. You can transfer between Line1 and Line2 just use one ticket, you do not need to buy two. But if you want to take the Line13, you cannot transfer directly from Line2 or Line1, you must buy another one. So if you know you will take Line1/Line2 then change to Line13, You'd better buy one 5 RMB ticket in the first place and then you will not need to buy the 3 RMB one again.

In this way, you will save your time of standing in lines and 1 RMB at the same time.

1 RMB saved is 1 RMB gained.

Is that a DVD?
By MELODYNYELLOW | 7/15/2006 6:48:42 AM

DVDs in China are very cheap. You don't need to think about the Law things or Copyright things about those DVDs, god knows why they are so cheap?!

If you like watching movies, it's the time for you to do a DVD collection in Beijing. The price for each movie is usually 5-20 RMB, about 1-2.5 USD. You can buy 20 movies like that you bought in America by spending the same money!!!

Best season
By MELODYNYELLOW | 7/15/2006 6:40:53 AM

The best season to visit Beijing is May, June, September and October. The climate in Early spring may not be good because you might meet "Yellow storms" at this time. Autumn is always the best season of Beijing. You will see the best views and blue skies.

If you want to come in Winter that is also a good idea. Because the biggest Chinese festival ChunJie is usually in Janurary(ChunJie follows the Traditional chinese calendar). Also you can see snow in this season. Beatiful Chinese traditonal buildings covered by snow, yes, You must get moved here.

Hou hai
By MELODYNYELLOW | 7/15/2006 6:28:21 AM

If I ask you where do you want to go in Beijing? You may answer me "Forbidden city, Great wall, Summer palace...things like that"

Yes you are right, those historical places are really nice and attractive to you foreigners. But as far as I can see, Hou hai should be your "must see" in Beijing. There are many nice little teahouses, chinese styles bars, Restautants and Beijing opera treaters here. It must be one of the best places to go in Beijing.

So called silkstreet
By MELODYNYELLOW | 7/15/2006 6:21:08 AM

I saw that many foreigners shopping in Silk street. If I were you, I would never do that. There are many good places for shopping in Beijing which are a lot better and cheaper than Silk street.

There are many stores in Silk stree selling cheap clothes and traditional things. You may feel excited when you come here at the first moment, but after then you should calm down and clear your eyes when shopping here. Most of the clothes especially silken clothes are not real. Other things like little gifts or crafts are almost bad quality made. Please take care of your wallet and keep it in your eye sight.
