what could be more innocent than students and tea?
By ANAINCHINA | 4/5/2006 6:47:11 AM
Watch out for students who want to practice their english in the Wangfujing area. I went to a tea shop with a young man who claimed to be an English student and wanted to practice (I'm a teacher). An hour & some tea & peanuts later, the waitress brought in a calculator and typed in our bill -- 560 kuai! I knew it was a scam the minute the waitress squeaked "dollar?" The young man was working for the tea house; he would bring foreigners in so they could charge them outrageous amounts. I heard a similar story from some Aussies who were charged 800 RMB (about $100 US) to see a tea ceremonies, again with english students. I put 40 RMB on the table and walked out, despite the guy's protests that this bill would break his bank account. It was definitely a sketchy situation -- when has a waitress ever brought the bill on a calculator? I've lived in china for a year and I love it here. Once you get past the belligerent yelling, most chinese are lovely people. Just be careful-- if something seems suspicious, leave!

if u want to stay safe.....
By TERRORISTMAN4806 | 1/30/2006 5:57:12 PM
One day when i was in china, a bunch of gangsters attacked me for no reason. the only reason i am alive today was because i grabbed hold of one guys knife and broke his fingers. china is not safe for the average tourist, especially if wou are middle eastern. everyone was always laughing at me and throwing food and stuff at me because i was middle eastern and stuff. so one day, when i got attacked, i finally fought back. after i broke the guys fingers, the others ran away but still, it is not safe in the back alleys and stuff

Save 5 yuan in the Beijing Zoo...
By MISHEN | 8/30/2005 9:15:00 PM
If you're going to the Beijing Zoo, and you want to see the pandas, you don't have to pay the extra five yuan for the Panda Hall at the front gate outside. The Pandas' outdoor enclosures are visible from the main public walkways. If the pandas are hiding, you can buy the 5 yuan ticket inside the zoo at the Panda Hall door.
ok, ok, so I'm the kind of guy who sometimes looks at the temple from over the wall if he can get away with it... travelling is expensive...

Racism
By WORLDS | 3/9/2005 4:50:40 PM
I just returned from Beijing. I was overwhelmed by the racism of the city's people. I was raised in the South of the US where racism is well known and have travelled extensively over six continents. Nevertheless, I have never encountered racism so blatant and omnipresent as in Beijing. Everyday people laughed and jeered at me. I may have been the only brown person they have ever seen, but that is not reason to treat me with disrespect. Everyday I felt as if I was not welcome and should leave. I felt this everyday by an overwhelming number of people, young and old, male and female. I felt this everywhere I went from the Forbidden City to the local shopping mall to the random streets. I felt unsafe.

Real Pickpocketting
By INTIANJIN | 8/5/2004 5:23:55 AM
Pickpocketting is active in Beijing. On our first night a child tried to picketpocket my girlfriend's pocket and take her mobile phone. Luckily it was wedged tightly enough in her pocket. The child stood back with his older partner and giggled about being seen.
Its not too easy to spot pickpockets because they're going to be behind you trying to reach into your pocket. Keep your eyes open when entering a new street or when you're surrounded by many people. Baggy pant pockets, open shopping bags, and accessible zippers/pockets on bags are easy to target.
Put locks on your backpack zippers. You'll notice many people in Beijing holding their purses infront of them and having their backpacks on their fronts. They are doing it for a reason.
