Foshan Eastern Square
By PRAISEHIMANYHOW | 7/26/2005 2:47:00 AM

Avoid shopping in this tourist trap. The gifts are beautiful but WAYYYYYYY overpriced. The whole purpose of this store, which contains only traditional Chinese products, is to create a one-stop shopping atmosphere for tourists who do not have time to compare prices.

The store has two floors. On the first floor are various teas and Chinese medicines. On the second floor are traditional Chinese-style shoes, scrolls, jade products, lanterns, humungous vases, et cetera.

Sitting Mother Buddha Statue (Guanyin)
By PRAISEHIMANYHOW | 7/26/2005 2:36:03 AM

This awe-inspiring statue of the sitting Guanyin or Mother Buddha is a 61.9-meter-high copper sculpture considered to be the largest one of its kind in the world. She sits atop the famous Xiqiao Mountain located in the southwestern part of Nanhai City and is well worth the steep climb to Daxian Hill peak.

The Mother Buddha is my favorite of the top scenic spots in Foshan. The mountain also is breath taking filled with luscious green trees, bubbling springs, gorgeous waterfalls, and fragrant flowers. A "must see" in southern China.

Man, Woman, Drink, Eat in ambiguous Guangzhou
By PEPPERMINT | 3/11/2005 11:46:28 AM

For woman, shopping in Guangzhou is sure to satisfy you with Teem Plaza, Times Square, Guangzhou Merchandize Department Store, Xin Da Xin and multifarious boutiques. What I want to recommend today is Ba Bai Ban, a hairdressing salon. There are many branches and the one I went to is located at Hong Cheng Mall, East to Teem Plaza. It is on the first floor on the east side of the mall. The price is 2 times that of a barbershop but it is worthwhile.

Drink
If u like Chinese tea, I would say Lanpu in Yue Xiu Park is a good place. You can choose anywhere in the park and have the whole tearoom to yourselves. The environment is fabulous, without noisy ads, karaok or bubbling crowds like most parks. The ticket to the Park is 8 yuan and it will be deducted from your tea cost. That is to say is you drink tea there, you dont have to pay for the entrance fee, wonderful, isnt it?

There are many cafes around Xiao Bei and Tianhe Nan. Also there is Star Bucks on Huanshi Dong Road. Cafes around Xiao Bei are worth trying since each of them has its selling point. UCB is where u can enjoy all: tea, coffee, meals-Chinese and Western.

Eat
I have talked about Guangyuan Road. This time I will introduce Pao Ma Chang in Tian He District. Sichuan, Hunan, Shanxi dishes can all be found here as well as, of cos, Canton dishes like seafood.
Liu Hua Zhou Cheng at Liuhua Park is also good, where u can taste all kinds of congee. The unlovely side is it is very noisy with the smell of seafood just under ur nostrils.
Shangxijiu offers all original local snacks but if u r a gourmet, local food offered in surrounding cities like Shunde and Nanhai would sate u more. Generally speaking, food in Guagnzhou has been adjusted to cater to the popular taste.

Restaurants in Guangyuan Road
By PEPPERMINT | 3/11/2005 10:07:49 AM

Around Gurangyuan Road, there are many eateries. The city-known Greenery Cafe can be found here. Also A Li Lang Korean Restaurant is a better choice than Jin Da Zhuang on Huanshi Dong Road. The price is lower but the food is better since the rent on Huangshi Dong is much more expensive! And service and surroundings of A Li Lang are also better! Xiangxiazai offers Guilin cuisines. There are also many soup experts like Wu Ling Shan Zheng though the hygiene condition is not that ideal. Dont know why Macau Street is always so crowded. Actually the food is just so so and the price is a little bit higher. If food instead of other factors is your premium consideration, go to Guangyuan Road.

cheap places to stay in Guangzhou
By ELCABRON | 2/20/2005 12:42:34 AM

For Guangzhou/Kanton I really have to recommend the Guangzhou YH on Shamian Island (2nd Shamian Sijie). They charge dormitory with 50 kuai but it is a neat place! Rooms have 6 beds but they offer a lot of space - not like in HK where they use every square inch. There is also a nice courtyard between the rooms and the office building.
The best thing of all is Shamian Island itself, of course. Full of beautiful buildings in colonial style. With all the flowers and trees it is like a big park. If you leave the island on the right side you will find a big fishmarket offering everything which lives in the water. From turtles to
Nearly opposite to Shamian Island there is the Qingping Market offering herbal medicine, dried snakeskin, and so on. But after SARS they reduced the offering a little bit, so I missed some things the Guangzhou cuisine is famous for.....
If you take the ferry across the ZhuJiang or Pearl River you find boulevards full of bars and restaurants. In the backstreets they offer real fake DVDs for 5 kuai without bargain - the cheapest price I found across China. It is said Guangzhou is the center of this business in China.

Tickets
By YCATSOLONG | 2/15/2005 6:28:12 PM

Despite what people say in regaurds to purchasing train tickets over spring festival, I've only had one minor set back in Guangzhou. The west train station is a nightmare! All of China's population must have wanted to leave to go somewhere. I had to wait in line for two and a half hours to get a ticket to Shenzhen, just to find out that they couldn't give me one! Boy what a mistake, I know now that to go to the east train station via subway ( cost 5 yuan) is a lot less stressful and there is a 10 minute wait at best. Thats a lot better than two and a half hours of complete bordom, apart from the little arguments that break out.Apart from that little set back I've had no problems at all getting tickets from the stations and it's a little cheaper than the booking offices.
Have fun!
