Essential Beihai Travel Tips for First-Time Visitors
By SANETRAVELLER | 1/5/2025 11:27:26 PM

Beihai, located in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China, is a scenic coastal city known for its stunning beaches, historical sites, and rich cultural heritage. If you're visiting for the first time, here are essential travel tips to enhance your experience:

Best Time to Visit: The ideal time to visit Beihai is from October to April. The weather is mild during these months, perfect for exploring outdoor attractions like Beihai Silver Beach, one of China’s most beautiful coastal destinations.

Getting Around: Beihai is a relatively small city, so it’s easy to explore on foot or by public transport, including buses and taxis. For more convenience, consider using ride-hailing apps like Didi for taxis. Renting a bicycle or an electric scooter is also a great way to get around, especially along the coastline.

Explore Beihai Silver Beach: This long, sandy beach is the city's top attraction, perfect for relaxation, water sports, and watching beautiful sunsets. Don't forget to try local seafood at one of the many beachfront restaurants.

Visit the Beihai Old Street: Take a stroll through this historical street lined with colonial-style architecture. You’ll find unique shops selling traditional handicrafts, local snacks, and souvenirs.

Historical Sites: Beihai has several historical sites, including the Beihai Ocean Garden and the Weizhou Island—an island rich in volcanic formations and beautiful beaches. It's also home to Beihai Old City with ancient temples and forts.

Language: While Mandarin is the official language, Beihai locals also speak Cantonese and Zhuang. It’s helpful to learn a few basic Chinese phrases or use translation apps to communicate.

Currency and Payment: The local currency is Renminbi (RMB). Credit cards are accepted in larger establishments, but it’s always good to carry cash for smaller shops or local markets. Mobile payment apps like Alipay and WeChat Pay are widely used.

Health and Safety: Beihai is generally safe for tourists. Drink bottled water, avoid raw street food, and use sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. If you’re planning to swim, be mindful of water conditions and any local advisories.

Local Cuisine: Beihai’s seafood is a must-try, with dishes like steamed fish, shrimp dumplings, and oysters. Don’t miss out on regional snacks like sweet rice cakes and fried crab.

By keeping these tips in mind, you'll be able to enjoy Beihai's natural beauty, history, and local culture to the fullest!

bad encounter at Xingping river boat ride
By DOFR | 4/28/2014 3:51:24 AM

I was in Xingping early April 2014 and had a very bad encounter with boat touts at the Xingping dock when I arrived by bus before noon. The women touts like triad society members harassing us once we decided to purchase boat rides. Once a woman with a crying child approaches us to the boat ride and we do not take her offer which she wants at CNY180 per pax and we were travelling in 3 pax. We decline her price and walked away and looking for a reasonable price but she kept harassing us and do not allow other touts to speak to us for negotiation. She behaved rudely and scolded us why we approach another person to purchase our boat ride. I have my right to choose who I want to buy my tickets from and who she thinks she is to tell me.
We learn from the boatman that the area there is run by chinese triad society and they use to harass tourists and once a woman approaches you no other touts are allowed to sell the tickets to us. What a behaviour and we are very pissed off by them. Spoils our day when we are harassed and swear never to recommend tourist to go for the boat ride.
We ended up paying CNY300 for the lousy 45 mins ride which is not worth. Please do not go to Xingping for any boat ride.

I had booked a room in Yangshuo, and arranged by Jack at Peace Family Hotel, the
he organized the purchase of tickets for the boat trip on the Li River. These must be purchased days before and we wanted "English boat" this time.

The boat trip starts in the morning one mil from Guilin and arrived at Yangshuo in the afternoon. The whole trip takes about four hours. The boats are air conditioned. You can stay inside and watch their surroundings
from there, or on the open deck. It has better views out there and get closer to nature. The lunch is served onboard. With local favorites and fresh catches from the Li River will be served. The fish is good and sometimes delivered by bamboo raft. The water is very clear and the boats floating on the 40 cm of water. Lots of fish and I have seen when they caught with a rod part which is quite large. Water buffalo are following the river and feeding themselves with seaweed on the River. Seaweed eaten even by the people and I eat it, but think it is very "chew".
Best time for a Li River cruise is before or after the rainy season.
April, May, September and October are the peak seasons. Be prepared for lots of people at that time.
This river cruise ends in Yangshou. You can take an hour long bus ride back to Guilin.
Or stay and relax for a few days in Yangshuo. Recommended and is a "must".

The Scenic Voyage
The 84-km Li River from Guilin to Yangshuo has three distinct sections.
The journey is full of beautiful places which are too numerous to mention. Therefore I can only name the most notable ones. Guilin City to Yangdi (46 km)
The scenic spots here are a bit away from waterways.
The most famous and surrounding Guilin is the Elephant Trunk Hill.
I'm sure you see it simply because it resembles exactly an elephant
with its trunk in water. It is also Sword Hill and a number of other beautiful peaks.
Yangdi to Xingping (17 km)
This section has Li River's most beautiful landscape of water and mountains.
You cruise along a picturesque waterway. Shapes of the peaks are just miraculous.
A flying waterfalls cancel much of the Erlang Gorge. Here are the two most scenic locations.

From Zhongshan to Guilin.
By GUNNARF11 | 5/9/2011 6:44:51 AM

The trip started with a bus from Zhongshan to Guangzhou. This time the trip was "very planned" in advance. The trip to Guangzhou usually takes about 1.5 hours. My brother was visiting and we would trying to take in a few places in southern China in the 14 days of his visit lasted.
We bought the day before the tickets for trains leaving T38/T39 19:47
3 Hard Sleeper, 2 pc Lower berth, 1 st Middle berth
2 x 215 + 1 x 207 RMB. (I mention prices here for those planning to go on your own).
For those who do not travel in groups, I recommend Willma wizard China, large and thick. Prices of rooms is perhaps not always, but it gives much info and above all is a lot of town names of places to visit in Chinese and help when English is not too widespread. Good when to buy tickets. Look train, which is the file: http://www.travelchinaguide.com/china-trains/ a must and you get much info to write off. It is good if you have plenty of time for ticket purchase. can be quite a queue,
same at "commit" to the train or bus. Large and many waiting rooms. The snow chaos for a few years ago "lived" about 100 000 at the station, who did not come off due to stopping of all the snow and ice in neighboring provinces.
I had booked a room in Yangshuo, and arranged by Jack at Peace Family Hotel, the
he organized the purchase of tickets for the boat trip on the Li River. These must be purchased days before and we wanted "English boat" this time.
The train comes to Guilin at 6:42 pm.
Departures for boats are: 09:30 to 10:30
There is little time to eat breakfast and on the other side of the square near the railway is lots of little nice places. (We took a breakfast for 6 yuan, about 6 RMB / person
and it was very good. The area reminded a bit of 'China's most breakfastplace "Wuchang in Wuhan, which is considered the best breakfast place in China. However, China is huge. I had arranged to ferry tickets would come to a particular hotel and we had time to go and look at the elegant pensioners morning fitness classes at river edge. image. There is also a "water taxi" to use your mobile phone or waving after transport. Paid previous 1 RMB per person for crossing.
Back to the hotel, where we got the tickets and told that there will be a bus
and collect us. How the bus came in and out again on the street, I had described the
as impossible, but it was possible.
2 Double Bed Rooms, 2 nights 160/rum = 2 x 2 x 160 = 640 RMB

How to get to Downtown from Guilin Airport
By MISSYBUNNY | 11/22/2010 12:29:16 AM

Guilin Liangjiang International Airport is the only airport in Guilin, and is about 30KM from the center of the city. To get to downtown, you can:

1. Take the Airport Bus. There will be an airport bus waiting for the passengers after each flight, at the exit of the arrival hall. It takes about 40mins to downtown, and 20RMB per person. The last stop is Civil Aviation Mansion, after get off you can take a cab to wherever you want to go and normally won’t cost more than 20RMB.

2. Take a taxi. Since the airport is about 30KM to the city center, it costs more than 100RMB to take a taxi. So, if you are solo traveler, I suggest you to take the airport bus, but if you are a group of people, you can split the bill. Lucky for me, my friend gave me the number of a taxi driver, who charges only 80RMB for the ride( it could be a little more expensive at night), so I never have to change at the Civil Aviation Mansion.

3. To leave for the airport, you can also take the bus at Civil Aviation Mansion from 06:30 to 20:00. The buses will depart every 30 minutes and the cost is the same.
