Pickpocket: modus operandi
By WANHU | 6/13/2010 9:02:17 PM

On June 4 (evening), I was with some friends buying things at the Luohu Walmart, and I sensed a man of aropund 35+ was following us. I observed that he had been followibng me for the past 15 minutes and kept his distance. When we came out of the premises he stopped following me and I let my guard down. My Chinese niece called me and I answered her, and suddenly my nephew who was about 5 metres in front jumped and caught a 10 year-old girl, trying to rummage my sling bag while I was answeing the call.

The man who was following me, suddenly came and took the girl away. From their faces, he could be her father or her relative. I felt sad that he was probably teaching her in this art of stealing. What would happen if the victim vents his anger on the girl if she gets caught?

Shenzhen Airport Annex Terminal
By WANHU | 1/26/2009 11:38:00 PM

Those flying with AirAsia from Kuala Lumpur, the terminal is no longer at B Terminal. A new annex terminal before A terminal has been built for low cost carrier, for both departures and arrivals.

Coming out of the terminal, on the right will be taxis queueing for passengers. For those arriving ETA 2045, if you want to use bus either #330 or #K568 that stops at Luohu, proceed to your right towards B terminal. Bus service ends around 2200. Either bus costs 20RMB per person. As usual, at the arrival taximen will say there's no bus service.

Taking a bus from Luohu stop before A terminal. Usually K568 stops here then it will proceed to B terminal.

First Time Trip to China
By WANHU | 1/26/2009 11:21:37 PM

Eventhough you want to stay at a cheap hotel or hostel, try to browse the internet for a general price. Don't expect VOA, try to get visa (at least L-visa) from your own country. In Malaysia it takes about 4 working days for normal application. If going to Shenzhen better apply for double entry or multiple entry visa in case you decide later to go to HK. From SZ to HK by KCR East Rail takes about 45 minutes to Tsim Sha Tsui East. Bring along some cash in RMB and other major currencies which later can be exchanged in most banks in China. Don't bank on credit cards, although you can bring along, most business establishments don't accept but cash. Bring along the medicines that you need, most western medicines are not that easy to acquire.

I thought 10,000RMB was enough for 14-day stay in Shenzhen, China for my health treatment for the first time, and of course I brought along my credit card. How wrong I was, because most business transactions were done in cash. I was lucky that Huaqiang bei hotel accepted payment by credit card.

For simple meals, 50RMB per day suffice but if you need fine dining expect around 150-200RMB per meal in restaurants. Study Shenzhen map before travel. Most road maps have English and Chinese names, this will guide you to memorise some Chinese characters. Then use bus instead of taxi. Most stage bus within district has a flat rate of 2 Yuan. Red taxi starting fee is 12.50RMB. Don't listen to taxi drivers because they will tell you there's no bus service to the airport. Metro subway is the best choice, reliable, faster and cheaper, from Luohu to Nanshan (Shijie Zhi Chuang station) for only 5 Yuan.

Last yet not the least, put important things into Chinese. Ask someone to write down on several pieces of paper, such as name of the hotel, food you like to order, etc. They are still trying hard to learn English, even tourist Police at the Bao'an International Airport are struggling to use some English words. Most bigger restaurants have both Chinese and English menu.

Muslim Food in Shenzhen
By WANHU | 8/14/2008 3:42:44 AM

There are abundant of Muslim food in Guangzhou, of various cuisines including Chinese but in Shenzhen although in every district has lamian shops that owned by Muslims, most restaurants are only in Luohu district. Through my observation, there are at least 3 good Muslim restaurants near Wenji Nan Lu (around Muslim bin guan) which are operated by Chinese. There are a few other smaller restaurants, one Indian restaurant which is not far from the railway station.

Most lamian stall operators are Muslims. This can be known and seen with white caps on their heads (for men and black headscarves worn by women). Seafood in China, unlike Thailand means stictly seafood but here also include meat and chicken. There are a few of these Muslim restaurants listed in zabihah.com. Those interested may browse www.zabihah.com.

From Macau to Shenzhen
By WANHU | 6/4/2008 7:30:44 PM

For Malaysians that want to go to Shenzhen from Macau has 3 options, by direct flight to Fuyong airport (Bao'an), ferry to Fuyong or Shekou, or by bus/taxi to Gongbei Port in Zhuhai. Airport bus AP1 costs MOP3.30 and every luggage deposited behid the driver will be charged MOP3. Some people take a free ride using buses provided by hotels that operate casinos. In Gongbei Port, traveller can either use bus (there are at least three bus terminals), and a free shuttle bus service to ferry terminal. Ferry from Macau takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes while from Zhuhai takes about one hour to Shekou. Express bus from Gongbei to Shenzhen takes about 2.5 hours that stops at Futian and Luohu. Beware of private car touts that ask for 600RMB to Shenzhen from Zhuhai where bus is only 80RMB and ferry is 110RMB.

City taxi in Macau starts at MOP11 while in Shenzhen is 12.50RMB. In Bao'an (SZ) there are two types of taxis, the usual maroon colour, and the green colour. The green one starts at 7RMB

Ferry Vs. Train
By SAILR | 10/31/2007 12:33:23 PM

I recently was in Shenzhen and needed to to to HK for the day on business. I took the train. It is really a commuter train, often no place to sit and stops at every little town and suburb.

I had planned to take the train to the HK airport the next day for my flight back to the US. After the previous day's experience, however, I chose the ferry from Shekou. It is MUCH faster, only 30 minutes. Your baggage is checked for you. When you arrive at the airport, you claim your baggage and then check in for your flight and check your bags right there at the ferry terminal. Then a shuttle bus takes you to your terminal. Absolutely wonderful! FORGET THE TRAIN!!
