I will be in Guangzhou next week, and would like to travel to Hong Kong for a few days. However, I have a single-entry visa. My proposed itinerary is Guangzhou to Hong Kong to Shanghai. Is it a problem to re-enter "mainland" China on a single-entry visa if the only stop is in HK? Is HK treated as part of PRC for visa purposes? My concerns is that I could be denied re-entry when I try to travel from HK to Shanghai. Would appreciate any insights anyone can offer.

You will have problem re-entering China from HK using a single entrance VISA. You need to go thru custom and immigration going from HK to China. If you have a US passport, you don't need a passport to visit Hong Kong. You can get another single entrance VISA while you are in Hong Kong. You can get it wihtin 1, 2, or 3 business days, depends on how fast you want it and how much you want to pay. Let me know if you need details in getting a China VISA in HK. Good luck. Chi

Hi guys, I was at the Chinese Consulate in Chicago USA this morning and I asked about a visa to go to Hong Kong from Guangzhou and the lady told me just what someone said if you have a US passport you don't need a visa to go into Hong Kong, but if you have a multible visa, you don't need to worry about getting another visa to get back into mainland China as long as the multible visa is valid, but if you have a single visa, you will need to get another one to reenter mainland China. If you have a little money get a multible visa.

Thanks for the information, everyone. Looks like I will be changing my plans to stay in China. A weekend in Hong Kong sounds like more fun than a weekend in Guangzhou, but such is life.

Hi ESTEP, It is not indicated in your post if you have previously been to Guangzhou ?? Sounds like you will be there next week for the famous Canton Trade Fair ?? While it is true HK and GZ are two different cities with two different personalities, Guangzhou is still an enjoyable metro area to visit. If you want to do some shopping, you will be very pleased. You might want to check out the fairly new Tee Mall downtown, and also many other independent stores and shops in the vicinity. Also, my favorite restaurant buffet, with a multitude of quality choices of both Cantonese and Western/International dishes, is at the 2nd floor level of the China (Marriott) Hotel. You do not have to be a hotel guest to utilize any of the public facilities at the hotel. As a part of the buffet, they will cook steaks and fresh seafood to your selection and liking. And at night, they usually have some great entertainment scheduled at locations within the hotel and at many other nearby venues in this very large and diverse city. And if you are flying in and out of Guangzhou, you will find the modern new Baiyun Airport (45 minutes from city center) to be very comfortable and user friendly. I hope you have a great time and a productive trip !!!

if you are in Guanzhou and you go to Honk-Kong, you are considered like leaving China: so if you want to go to Shanghai from H-K, you need two entries on your visa. have a nice travel!

If you're not clearing immigration, simply staying in the airport transit area, you shouldn't need a China visa.
