Thank you for all this good information on this subject, Conny, Peacock, California, May, Pinetree and Anthony !! On the way home from my office today, I stopped by one of my favorite (larger) Chinese restaurants, but could not find the bamboo wrapped rice version. I think this is a too ‘authentic’ type dish for most Americans, so I presume I would have to go to a Chinese restaurant in a more ethnic Chinese populated area such as San Francisco, for this ?? I did, however, get a large order of the other type of pan fried dumpling; the type that most westerners crave so much and are so popular here, both fresh in all Chinese restaurants and also found frozen at the supermarket !! The sauce is very important as you all indicate. Here, it varies in the recipe from restaurant to restaurant; but it seems to be a mixture of soy, vinegar, sugar, and hot pepper flakes. It is so very good !! Also what is so wonderful, is that nearly all of the restaurants here, make the dumplings fresh, the traditional labor intensive way, and each has its own character and unique texture/flavor.
I am so happy there is such a strong Chinese cultural influence in my state !!

It sounds so delicious. I will be working the 31st and not be able to enjoy any dumplings. I am so disappointed.

In my hometown, there are three kinds of customs to celebrate this traditional festival.

First, to get the wormwood before the sunrise. then put it into the water to wash face.

Second, to make paper gourds also before the sunrise.

Third, to make dumplings.

Really homesick now! :(

Hi peacock,
In xi'an, we also use the wormwood to celebrate this festival. But we use them to decorate our gate and to avoid the insects.
